This was weird, but fun. And I now have a great memory as to what my belly looked like at this time!

(What the packages and the kits don't tell you) Okay, I decided to put this list together so that you can avoid some of the blunders I made. We were so excited to be making a cast that we ended up rushing into it without doing everything beforehand. Some of these things we did think of, others not so much until it was "Go time" and they had to be done quickly. -sit or lie down, reclining is your friend. You would think this one is a no brainer but honestly I thought that the best way to get "a good casting" of my tummy was to stand up the whole time. Well, peeps, I'm 37+1 and now I'm ruddy exhausted. Not to mention that my ankles started to swell a little bit, which caused my second prompt: -everything starts itching. Of course it does, I mean, you're beginning to get your midsection encased in plaster. You're pretty much immobilized because, at least at the stage I'm at, all your movement kinda centers in your abdomen area. If I do this again, I would either A.) have a person as a designated scratcher (someone other than your plaster-er, the first child perhaps? a good friend maybe) or B.) have a loooong scratching pole in your hand. I saw the telescoping back-scratchers at the grocery store a few minutes before going home to start this project, and it completely passed over my head that maybe one of those was a GREAT idea. -pre cut your strips (if you're using cloth or plaster strips) beforehand. We bought the pre-plastered fabric tape, all we had to do was wet and stick, but a big part of that was cutting the strips. If you can find the plaster tape (or plaster "cloth" according to the snotty lady at the Hobby Lobby) I would buy two rolls of the 4" x 180". Cut it into 6, 8, and 12" lengths, and have them separated into these designated lengths so that when you need "just a little more" or "a longish one" they're at hand. -Be generous. I absolutely mean it. And with just about everything. We covered the floor with towels, but I've read you could use newspaper. We cut more strips than we needed- he ended up using them all anyway. And the petroleum jelly. You want to coat any parts of you that are going to touch the plaster, because when you're removing the cast from your body once it's dry, it will probably stick to any unjellied bits of you. Be especially generous around your breasts, obviously these won't take very kindly to being pulled on by dry plaster. If you've got hair on your stomach area I would remove it before beginning this process, even those light baby hairs that cover your body tend to get pulled when you're removing the cast. -have a fan. I honestly didn't think much about this one before starting even though it, too, seems like a no-brainer. The only reason I thought to have a fan was because the plaster strips' package recommended it as a drying method. But it helps a LOT- with drying, irritability, if you get hot, and even with some of that itching I mentioned. By the time my guy finished applying the top layer, the underside touching my skin was pretty well dry. I only had to stand there a minute or two once he was done applying, while he laid out the towel we were going to lay the cast out on. -do NOT use pottery plaster. Read the package really well before you make your purchase or start application: if it says "do not attempt to make a cast enclosing part of the body", DO NOT attempt to make a cast enclosing your body with it! I honestly don't think you guys would do this, but I think if I didn't write it someone might do it. Thou hast been warned, meen darlings. Please don't be a dunderhead. You're a baby mama, be sensible and don't burn yourself. And don't collapse into a sniveling mess if it doesn't turn out right (unless you're just completely out of control of your hormones-- then destroy everything and have some chocolate). Plaster is definitely not the easiest medium that was ever invented, and when you can't see your toes, no one expects a 'David'. Do your best, forgive yourself if you screw up completely, and try not to make a complete mess of your house. ;)
