The door to the agency finally clicks shut. Someone was here earlier, a woman, red-eyed and wound up. She screamed and cried until her voice went raw, the vases rattling, his bones shifting. Her face mottled red and she stormed out, a tissue balled in hand.
Verin is here now—was she sitting out in the waiting room?—and Sam wonders if he should close for the day. He could use some gin.
“What can I say?” He spreads his hand out by his waist, sly. “Everyone's dying to see me.” That wasn't serious. One corner of his mouth tugs like that was funny, then Sam opens the door to his office wider, letting her in. “Come on. I'm toothless as a kitten. Case in point?” He stops, pointing to a blue tin. “Old people send me cookies,” he says. “Help yourself.”
