What if I told you....
there is a place where autistic people could get together, and feel comfortable with one another? A nice quiet place, where the hustle and bustle of the outside world was just simply not present, not something you have to fear, but a place where it just does not happen? This place would be outside the city without the noise pollution, and the light pollution, and the general human presence was not a worry. The smells around you would be nature, in all of it's goodness, and all the adults around you "just got it". Well folks, this is a mythical place, not unlike Dr Xavier's school for the "specially gifted". It does not exist... It should exist! To all the parents out there, with what little hope you have left, I challenge you to help me find a way to make this place become a reality. We are the only ones who can do it, and do it right, because we are the professionals, in truth. I see a farm setting, with out-buildings, with rooms for a little WIFI and Minecraft time-outs.... Allow our children to identify what it is they can excel at, and watch the flowers grow. What is the big hold up here? Fear of rejection? Fear of failure? Really? We are the only people who can accomplish this huge undertaking, yet we allow the fear of loosing our hope to stand in our way! We need each other, yet we fear that we might see a glimmer of disdain from one more human being, that we isolate ourselves because it hurts so deeply... those looks! We would, I promise you, never see that in each others eyes, only that little smile of understanding... I know you have seen it before... It looks like a stifled giggle, the recognition of a friend in a foreign land. That feeling is so profound, that it should drive two people together, but the polar opposite seems to happen. Who is on board?
