i skipped the intermediate class on monday because i wasn't feeling well on sunday and i wanted to let my body rest. i bring this up only because i want to talk about ambition. i'm a very ambitious person. doing ballet as an adult is helping me rein in my ambitious nature. a lot of young people view dancing as an obsession. i love that. if i started young, i'd probably see it as an obsession, too. but starting ballet in my twenties is like discovering a new passion. it's okay to skip a class. i am allowed to work at strictly my own pace. sometimes i get so wrapped up in doing better, being better, that i forget to just stop and enjoy what i'm learning, and where i've come from. i think that's what's great about starting ballet in my twenties -- that i get to work at my own pace, my only competition is myself, and i can give permission to cut myself some slack. so while i feel guilty about skipping monday's class, i know that it's not the end of the world, and i'm still going to progress, even if i miss a lesson or two.
meanwhile, one of my friends, sam, said she missed me on monday, which is sweet because it means she noticed i wasn't there.
tonight's class was fast-paced for beginners. we are doing some plie work with developpes which is new. i felt a little behind in areas and pretty on point (ha, i'm so punny) during others.
i'm still struggling with the batting of the leg, like when doing a jete and you double tap your ankle/calf and extend the leg again. the movement is done so fast and it's so hard to keep up. i know what i'll be doing in line at starbucks this week, though. does anyone else tendu in line? i try not to be obnoxious about it.
floor work went well. we did a new thing that i do not know the name of, but it's basically a little hop. so if you know what this little hop thing is called, please tell me because i really don't know.
anyway, looking forward to next week as always. i bought two new leotards recently which i think are really lovely. man. i think i'm becoming one of those dance people.
