(ugh I hate even that word, anti, but whatever, Iām going there because I never have before but maybe I need to.)
The whole āantiā thing with this writer baffles me. I literally donāt understand the point. And it has nothing to do with being critical or not. I have never said Aelin (or any other character, for that matter) is perfect. That would be boring af. I have been plenty critical about both series, enough so that my posts have been reblogged and anti tags slapped on (this one, most frequently). So please donāt come around here and act like I forgive every questionable behavior or as if I donāt recognize problems. Because I definitely do. And also, donāt put words in my mouth about what I do/donāt believe. This is not a way to prove your point or have effective, productive discussion. And you know which group tends to do that to me more often? Antis.
Hating on a thing and criticizing it are not the same. And itās always one way or another, no in between - either you are anti or a stan, and the two seem to be mutually exclusive, only they arenāt, all all. I think this is maybe what bothers me the most, is being pigeon-holed as if Iām either anti, or excusing every single shitty thing that has happened in these books. As if by writing fic I refuse to acknowledge diversity issues. Or as if by criticizing Rhysand, I hate the series and sjm. Like.... no. Thatās not how it is. There are shades of grey, people.
I just donāt want to be associated with a group of people who go around having hate blogs and stirring up shit just because... I donāt know, really. Boredom? I follow a few book blogs on here that regularly publish posts about books they have issues with, and why. But they donāt go around trying to post on other peopleās accounts in order to make problems. And sometimes I disagree with those people, but I still follow them because I respect what they are doing. And I also donāt want to be treated as if Iāve never been critical, or as if Iāve ever said anything about these books was perfect. Because thatās literally untrue!
Have your posts about why you donāt like a thing, whatever. No one is stopping you from that. But Iām not going to search out people who donāt agree with me, mostly because A) I donāt give a shit, and B) I donāt have time for that. So donāt do that to me. Iām too busy reading and writing things for people who will have an open mind about what I have to say, with whom I can have productive dialogue which includes both discussions about the lack of diversity, and which of the Archeron sisters would enjoy bondage the most. Guess who drew genderqueer! Coran? To grown-ups who are transgender, either having already found out or had just realized; you all are valid! If you have a spouse, special other, or even a child or children, I wish you the best of luck! Day 4: Free Day!

Chapter 32: The Eastern Border
Is it always a good thing?
That moment when you're torn between happiness about a book's minority inclusion and queasiness that the author is just checking the boxes on representation without much characterization. Sometimes I think "because they exist in our world" is reason enough to include characters of all genders, races, ethnicities, and sexual orientations, but if you can swap attributes between characters without affecting your story much, is the author really doing the work? Thinking about The Kaiju Preservation Society in particular, but also felt the same about The Stranger Times.
