I apparently have more to say. I've been thinking about Rie's "because" in the context of their commentary on the ideas behind "cOy" - specifically the framing of Rie's character as someone inexperienced trying to lead in a relationship while Junji's character is more experienced and trying to follow his lead.
The conflict immediately read to me as having something to do with the seriousness or openness of their relationship, and as a queer person who came into my queerness in the late 90s to early 00s in the states (near SF) my brain immediately went to: how out the individuals were and how public they were willing to be with their relationship. Did Junji's character have bad past experiences being too public? Or maybe with a closeted partner breaking up with him? Did that cause assumptions and a fight?
I definitely read the second pool scene (blue sweater) and cafe kiss as a reconciliation and trying to move forward scene. But also as a medium space: we can have this openness in safe spaces like the cafe we know other queer people spend time at.
The more times I watch and listen, the more I am convinced that is a reconciliation scene though.
Fun observation from conversations about Rie's "because" in YouTube comments: there are 2 pool scenes! Green shirt one happens before ramen eating scene (shirt can be seen hanging to dry), second one is the blue sweater from this case kiss scene. This gives me timeline thoughts of cafe kiss scene is part of make up scene actually and happens after the fight.
I think a big part of me leaning towards end up together is the repeated lyric "in the end we become one" throughout the song.

First of all, I am in love with his voice in this! He's always had one of my favorite voices in the group, but I think this is really the first time we are hearing the range of his capability and it's incredible.
Like KB's "be free," I would class this as a hopeful if open ended queer song. While there is not a clear timeline between the different scenes, based on the color saturation of the scenes, the overall hopeful and open tone of the love song, and the lyrical emphasis on firsts, i really interpret this as a first fight scene, not the end of a relationship.
This brings feelings of a situation where the two halves of a young, queer relationship are unequally out or unequally comfortable with becoming out. Of a situation navigating avfirst queer relationship and how to have it in the world.
The entire MV is focused on Rie and Junji, their awe and exploration of each other, we've got kiss scenes, roughhousing shirtless in bed, and among other things in the pool scenes, what looks like first time taking shirt off in front of a partner for the less secure partner.
The look back at the ending is hopeful, and the lyrics are telling us of a desire to figure this out, to be each other's only one. I think that it will also be telling if they appear together in the background in Mill/Nine's arc, the way Kyubin and Yoojung did in theirs in Junji's MV, which sort of confirms for me the hopefulness of the KyuJung ending.
I am in love with this song, if might be my favorite be series song yet. And again it feels like an authentic, hopeful part of their queer narrative.
