Welcome back to "Just Plain Beautiful" month, where we'll be looking at some unusual variants on some animals often considered too ordinary to contain anything extraordinary enough to feature. (...Not that those seen everyday aren’t beautiful in their own right, too, of course. : ) )

Hebard's Balta Cockroach
Scientific Name: Balta hebardi
Region: Southwestern Australia
Size: About .98" (25mm) long
Interesting Note: Â As you can see in the above photograph, these beautiful cockroaches have translucent wings with a delicate, "hand-painted"-looking opaque design. Â The length of said wings helps determine the gender - the above appears to be a female as the wings do not extend past the end of her abdomen. Â These beautiful roaches are thought to have brought inspiration to some Indigenous Australian artists.. I can certainly see why!
