While Queenie was floating plates to the table for dinner, a creature pounced suddenly onto her. It was one she’d yet to meet, a cute little thing though, and she would have smiled had she not heard the scurried thoughts pouring from him. A mix of incoherence muddled with images of Newt curled up on the ground.

Dropping everything, plates crashed but didn’t make a sound for Queenie as she rushed into the suitcase. She thought of a million things all at once, how she could help him first and foremost, and what would happen if Tina came home early. This surprise visit was supposed to be a good thing, Queenie had been working on a special meal and everything.

But as soon as she saw him she knew.

Beasts crowded around, worried sounds of an animal kingdom flowed throughout the space, and Queenie broke through them all to fall beside him. “W-What happened ??” Poison. “Tell me what to do, Newt, you gotta tell me.” It takes all of her effort to stay calm in the face of this. Inside she was a rush of panic and fear. A world without Newt Scamander seemed much too sad a place to be.

It’s going to be alright, Queenie. Just stay here, please, I don’t want to be alone… Looking around, Queenie smiles. “Alone, you?” Sitting down carefully beside him, she runs a hand through his hair. “Look around Mr. Scamander, you’re surrounded by family.” His nod is almost indiscernible as he lips try desperately to pull into one last smile. I am, I am, take care of them for me, please…and tell Tina I…

No one can be prepared for how death feels. She was in his head, connected, and then suddenly there was a void. A dark space where his light should have been glowing. Queenie felt it in her bones, hands shaking as she willed him to wake up, to just finish his thought even though she knew what he would say.

The beasts felt it, too. They shifted restlessly, some coming closer to curl in beside him, others landing on her. Sounds came from them all, soft and low, a chorus of mourning for their mama.

thanks for your last letter. greece must be so beautiful right now. i’ve never left the city ---- sometimes i think new york is just so dull and drizzly and overcrowded; yet i love it all the same. a part of me loves the familiarity, yet another part of me yearns for life outside the skyscapers. 

i have a confession to make. being an auror, i have had my fair share of an upside-down life. however, something strange has happened since you left. i am suddenly bored to tears over everyday life. yes, being an auror does have its moments, but most of the time it’s daily paperwork after paperwork of petty crimes and recurring cases. 

life is so predictable without you. 

i don’t know if i miss you. i don’t know if i’ll regret this when i wake up ( i’m owling this at 2:45 AM, according to my clock ). but i do know that if you came back, i wouldn’t turn you in to macusa again. 

A pained little wail escaped him as the Niffler ran through the building, a spell thrown by the wizard chasing him having hit him in the front leg. Leaving small claw prints of blood after him as he tried to escape his attacker. The intent was clear. That wizard had no intention of letting him get out of the house alive even though the little creature hadn’t even gotten to the point of stealing anything.
