fanfic writing is using real people as characters within imaginary stories.

the people used are now characters in a fictional story that probably has no limitations. the writer doesn’t mean harm or disrespect to the person, themselves. as far as this goes, every writing and reading mind should be on the same page that there is never meant to be a direct link to the person used and the content written. so if someone comes to you claiming that you crossed the line, reflect. and if someone comes to you asking something too specific to the ones you write about, turn them away.

why you should add your age to your writing/reading blog.

it’s not to be creepy or personal, it’s to warn adults who write nsfw content and/or don’t want a minor to be following them—and mainly to keep you from being able to follow them even if they write sfw content. as free as the internet may seem, (and as often as nsfw writers must speak on the topic) minors interacting with adult content can lead to literal lawsuits and crimes committed—which is why we won’t shut up about this. putting your age, minor or adult, on your blog somewhere visible erases the possibility for mistakes or ignorance and will ultimately keep you and others from any trouble. this especially goes for nsfw writers. even the adult population who write fanfiction will do a U-turn from your blog if you write mature content without your age visible. in your bio, carrd, navigation, about post—just put it somewhere. and most importantly—do not lie about your age. we can tell!

masterlists are top priority.

no matter how you organize them, having a single (or multiple because there’s a link limit per post) post where others can find each and every work (as you remember to link them there lmao) you’ve done will help you in the long run. it can be liked, reblogged, and commented all the same as a way for others to keep tabs on your content instead of having to reblog everything you post. but most importantly, you can show your audience just what the content they are about to embark on holds. giving a word count, list of genres, and which member the story is about (at the very least of what you can add into a masterlist) helps grab their attention and help them determine if they’ll enjoy the content before they even click on it. despite not adding trigger warnings to the masterlist, this can still keep some readers from seeing things they don’t want to be reading about. also descriptions/summaries are sexy.

if you don’t explain what you like/don’t like writing about, people will take advantage of you.

if you’ve ever stumbled upon a writer’s information post and got into the section where they happen to list the content of what they absolutely refuse to write about—here’s a little backstory: they probably got a request to write about at least one of those topics, and it sucked. the lists written isn’t to detour you from reading their content or fear requesting in case you ask for something they don’t like writing about (that’s not listed yet), it’s to show their boundaries. especially when it comes to writing nsfw content, there are many topics (it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t have a ‘will not write about’ list) that are potentially triggering, disturbing, or hurtful towards the writer or their audience. the extremely long spectrum of kinks is bound to make someone uncomfortable from even just one on the list, so don’t take any of them lightly and feel free to make a list of your own so boundaries are set. respect whatever is listed or will become part of someone’s list. the guidelines given by a writer aren’t there to be tailored to your liking or used in a request in any sort of way. please remember writers are humans behind screens, too.

add “all rights reserved © your url + the current year” to every bit of content you write.

in the storm that is new writers or people just wanting to get high notes from a stolen topic without realizing the harm done, this magical little note engraves your control over your content and a buildable case if you need to bring in the law. yes, this is fanfic writing and this sounds insane. but writing takes hours of time, personal messages written within, stories crafted by one mind to be enjoyed by others—and the entire process deserves to be protected. if you haven’t yet or are planning to begin your writing journey, take this seriously and add a copyright to your content, no matter how small.

warnings lists are bulky, but necessary.

whether sectioned off by content warnings or smut warnings, list every bit and piece written that you can remember. this can range from violence to hand holding, but everything listed will help the readers be able to sort out if they should be reading the content in the first place in order to keep themselves within their boundaries. the warnings aren’t there for show, they’re there for readers to see. a controversial topic in this discussion are those who complain about what’s listed, despite being warned about it. if you have something labeled within the warnings—the message was there and clear as can be. what happens past that is beyond a writer, so don’t take the warnings list with a grain of salt. meme: i give you content warnings list, you give me zero asks in my inbox about a “taboo” topic in the warnings because you decided to keep reading despite not being comfortable with that topic. a single road goes in two directions! ! all of this also goes for the fact that trigger warning (#tw) specific topics will shadow-ban the post from the other tags altogether. because of this, writers may not trigger warning tag the topic, so filtering the content from your own tumblr won’t actually work. so always make sure to read the content warnings just in case ! and as always, if you notice a triggering/unmentioned topic within someone else’s writing—tell them. if the writer gets upset about you mentioning something they forgot or you “interpreted incorrectly”, that’s their ignorance and you surely aren’t the only one who noticed they forgot a warning.

use a tagging system for everything.

the use of a tagging system actually goes miles. it can be categorized by drabbles, fics, series, etc. or by groups or members, but either way it makes the searching and scavenging process a little easier (for you and readers). this also helps with things such as asks, a ‘to read’ tag for reblogs of works you haven’t gotten to yet but what to support, or even a sweet little mutuals tag.

over-tagging is helpful, but annoying if you do it wrong.

tags help get your content far and wide, but if you inaccurately tag your works—you can easily do more damage that help. have you ever been scrolling through a headcanon, fic, or imagine tag for a specific member and noticed a few other members are tossed into those tags? annoying, right? the best way to avoid being that writer who tags for clout and not for the community is just to focus on what’s upfront! stick to tagging things such as the member’s group name or real name, what the content is, and your personal blog tags or else you could cause someone to hate searching through the tags—even of your own blog—due to never finding what they’re searching for where it’s meant to be.

how to properly tag nsfw content: seriously.

instead of filling the tags with the group and member names, the use of the smut tags is the main link to those who will (and the only ones who should) interact with the content. even the use of “#group name imagines / #group name scenarios” is placing it into the spotlight for readers who shouldn’t be seeing nsfw content to see, but that is also out of our hands. at the very least, only putting your nsfw written content into the smut tags will keep the content in the line of sight of the audience you’re actually trying to reach.

why “works in progress” posts are considered risky to have.

people steal, this goes back to the copyright advice. but thoroughly writing out future content (mind you, with the intention of getting people interested in what’s to come—not to share ideas with those willing to take what they can find.) does initially put you on the fence of what can be saved and stolen. it’s happened many times before, so don’t be convinced it won’t happen to you. but not everyone is out to steal. your wips post can still do you good, so put out as much information on what your working on as you want. but use that copyright heavily. if you’ve noticed yours or someone else’s wip taken: don’t be afraid to mention it. ask questions, to the one with the wip, original writer, or even yourself. my biggest advice: keep it in the dms and off the dash!

that annoying thing about requests.

the funniest request you’ll probably every get is that specific request. the one written out so thoroughly that is makes you say “why don’t they just write this themselves?” And as much detail as writers like to get in a request, this one takes the biscuit for having word for word. if you write this request, have fun. if you made this request, my advice: you might be a writer too lmao. but when it really comes to requests, take them lightly. don’t write what you don’t want to, don’t feel the need to write as soon as you receive it, and most certainly don’t feel obligated to write it in the first place. there should be a better understanding between writers and readers about how requests are always up in the air and may not be done, but this is the best use of the system we’ve got right now. write what you want and when you can, the audience will do with what the receive.

not every work needs smut.

as bad as the influx of sudden smut-priority related content has taken over the fanfic writing scene, that doesn’t mean every piece of fanfiction needs smut in it. just because you are over 18, primarily write smut, or have a following that happens to give most of their feedback to content related to smut: that doesn’t mean it’s a necessity for everything. write the story how you want it, that’s the point of you being the writer and not anyone else. fuck the algorithm.

just because everyone else is writing it, doesn’t mean you have to.

there are times when specific plots, headcanons, or general thoughts seem to overtake a fandom and run rampant, and everyone wants in. write as you get inspired to, but don’t feel obligated to write about a certain topic just because it’s what’s currently hot. the feedback/interaction you’ll receive from band-wagoning won’t be pretty when you go back to writing things on your own accord, and the blog activity readings can be heart breaking. take things step by step, and only write about what you want to.

when writing feels like a task instead of a hobby, recoup.

never allow writing fanfiction to surpass anything else other than something fun you enjoy doing. yes, writing is a task in itself—but if you ever find yourself thinking “I have to write this today or else I’ll be behind.” or “if I don’t get this written, I'll feel bad.” rethink this hobby. write small things. write something big. for once, write one thing at a time. just redo your system so that the stepping stones of “I need to” return to “I want to”. and please remember you’re only one person.
