Number 25 - Beach Slang “Nobody Say Nothing”
I have a central idea that governs my philosophy over music. I believe that we constantly chase the nostalgic sounds of what made us fall in love with music to begin with. We pick favorite bands and songs because something nestled away inside that music brings us back. Beach Slang is no different.
The hauntingly delicate acoustics of Nobody Say Nothing instantly takes me back to a time when things were simpler. Something about the acoustic guitar and lush string instruments invokes shades of The Beatles. The bellowing strings have the feel of Eleanor Rigby. There isn’t any fancy production work here for the band to hide behind. It’s just a guitar with an amazing string section selling the longing of the song’s narrative.
James Alex, the lead singer of the Philadelphia based band, seems to have regret in his vocals. This song is begging for things to have gone differently between the two people involved. There is hurt coming from both ends. Something we can all relate to whether in our current relationships or in relationships buried in our past.
I know many a critic long for when Beach Slang was a little bit wilder. I, however, enjoy some introspection as the band continues to mature. This was one of my most listened to tracks in the beginning of the year.
