three of the top kpop companies met at the mnet studio one morning. the captions pop up on the screen as the camera pans across the exterior of the studio building. it cuts to a scene of a conference room. SEO RAN, ceo of SR MEDIA, is already seated in one of the chairs. otherwise the room is empty save for the camera crew.
âah,â she sighs, leaning her weight into her elbows on the table, âi was too early, wasnât i?â the next shot zooms into a paper cup of coffee with a new caption on the screen: she bought coffee for all of the others. a few more seconds of the quiet room tick by before the door finally opens. in steps YOON JIHUN. a new caption announcing his title as ceo of STUDIO DELTA flashes across the screen.
âiâm not late, am i?â he asks, sitting down after bowing and greeting his fellow executive politely.
ânot at all, i was early,â the woman responds. âplease, take what you like,â she gestures to the untouched cups of coffee in the center of the table. jihun takes a cup and thanks her.
a few moments later, the door opens again. this time, two women walk in. itâs YUNA and BOM, both LIME ENTERTAINMENT artists or in bomâs case, former artist. the screen flashes a quick compilation of their old performances as the captions introduce the two celebrities to the viewer. for bom, theyâre sure to show her appearances on other survival shows, her strict nature, and how sheâs here as the vocal expert of the day. theyâre quick to make pleasant talk with the two ceos while they wait for the rest of the group to arrive. ran and bom start chatting about the last time they met, backstage for a special year-end performance. itâs been a long time since ran has been on stage.
âwho are we still waiting for?â jihun asks, and not a moment later YOOJUNG of A.MAZE opens the door, startling the ceo who asks âhave you been waiting for a cue this whole time?â the group laughs and the scene is taken over by another compilation of clips, some of practice room scenes, and an introduction of yoojung as the dance expert. the scene cuts ggain to J-YOON from HIT also entering and finding his seat, the clips of his performances and captions praising his skill and eye for talent as they announce him as the rap expert.
the group of six sit and chat and enjoy their coffee for a few moments longer. then, jihun speaks up. âyou all know why weâre here today,â his tone becomes more professional, as if he had forgotten about the task at hand until now. âthere were thousands of submissions to the mnet website for auditions to this program. weâve been asked to narrow it down to the top contestants.
tablets with the audition videos already loaded on them are handed to the main judges and special evaluators alike. âwhere should we start?â ran asks, looking around her team. âladies first?â she suggests.
it seems that the rest of the group is in agreement, since yuna reads off the first name on the list: âHWANG BADA,â she says. âthat name sounds familiar,â jihun muses, though he never places where he may have heard it before.
the screen is filled with badaâs audition video. âhello! iâm hwang bada, twenty-one years young,â the girl on the screen says. cut to the judges while ran murmurs âshe looks nervous,â and yuna responds âsheâs pretty,â
badaâs dance performance plays out on screen, the camera occasionally cutting away to the judges whose reactions are hard to read until the performance is complete. âwell,â yoojung speaks, knowing heâll be the one expected to give his expertise on the dancers. âshe looks⌠a bit inexperienced. her hands are a bit awkward, and she seems a bit stiff, but i think thereâs a lot of potential there. she has a sense of rhythm, which is hard to teach.â the other judges seem to murmur their agreement.
up next is LEE JINAE. itâs ran who reads off her name this time, and with a grin and a nudge at her co-judge she speaks, âit says here she put down studio delta as her preferred company. youâll have to let me know what you think.â
jinaeâs performance fills the screen and begins. it soon becomes apparent that both vocals and dance are part of her performance, the first time the judges have seen that tonight, and the camera is sure to catch the way brows raise and interest is piqued among the judges. the girl performs well and it seems that the judges are impressed. ârapping and dancing at the same time isnât easy,â j-yoon shares, and yuna nods her agreement. âitâs impressive that she was able to stay so stable despite the choreography.â
LEE NAYOUNG is the next contestant up. her performance begins, also singing, dancing, and rapping, though itâs less impressive since she wasnât the first one to show it. no one remarks on it this time. however, bom speaks up, âi think iâve seen her before,â she muses aloud, âhasnât she been on other survival programs? i thought she was a trainee. i wonder what happened. she has a nice voice, though sheâs not supporting her breath very well.â
the screen flashes through a few more auditions quickly, showing one young girl who sings decidedly off-pitch with all of the confidence in the world. âi admire her bravery,â jihun says. it looks like yuna is trying very hard to stifle her laughter. other clips are too dark or blurry to really make out, and the judges seem to be getting annoyed with the poor quality contestants theyâre being shown.
finally, they come to MIN HYEJIN. â28 reasons?â yunaâs brows raise as they realize what song this contestant is performing. âthatâs quite challenging vocally. and sheâs dancing as well?â all of the judges seem to be enraptured by hyejinâs performance, watching and listening carefully as she sings and dances to the song. when the clip is over, itâs bom whoâs actually the most impressed. âitâs not easy to live up to the original performance,â she explains to the others, who seem astounded that she has anything good to say about anyone. âbut hyejin did an amazing job.â
âup next is a dancer, iâm told,â yoojung smiles, anticipating this performance. âCHARLOTTE SAEA MOON,â he reads from the tablet, and the girlâs audition takes up the screen. âa boy group song?â ran questions as the music starts. âthatâs a unique choice,â the judges seem to be pleased overall with her performance, a few nods and smiles as notes are taken down. âitâs clear she knows and loves this song,â yoojung smiles, âthatâs what i love to see from dancers, to be honest. when they love the music, they put on a better performance.â
a few more auditions flash quickly over the screen by various contestants, none lasting longer than a second and apparently not interesting enough to share in full with the audience yuna reads the next girlâs name off of their list, âOH HAEIN.â
âis this original choreography?â jihunâs interest seems to be piqued as the contestantâs audition plays for the group of judges. yoojung nods confirmation; he would know, of course. âsheâs a bit sexy,â ran muses, though it doesnât seem to be a bad thing. bom murmurs her agreement. they seem to thoroughly enjoy the performance. âi want to watch that again,â yoojung laughs, looking at the writers and producers behind the cameras as he asks, âcan i? do we have time?â
finally, they announce that theyâre on the final audition from female applicants. the judges are beginning to look a bit tired, likely a bit fried from watching who knows how many auditions already. âbrighten up,â ran announces to her team of judges, âmiss RYU EUNKYUNG deserves our full attention!â
eunkyungâs audition begins with a fan-favorite song. even yuna canât help but exclaim with an excited little gasp âitâs sominnieâs song!â jihun looks particularly proud that his artist is still so well loved, despite the song not being as current as it once was. âitâs another difficult choreography,â yoojung muses aloud as they watch the girlâs dance performance. âit requires a lot of control and is difficult for idols who have been performing for years. iâm surprised sheâs doing so well.â
the scene shows the outside of the studio again, the captions announcing that the judges took a break for lunch before starting to review the boysâ auditions. when they return to the conference room, the coffee cups from the morning have been cleared and theyâre looking a bit refreshed and ready to review more tapes.
âup first,â jihun picks up his tablet and looks at the list of names, âCHO HANEUL. it says here he was a trainee before. iâm anticipating this performance.â
the judges seem rather impressed by haneulâs audition as soon as it starts, yoojung once again pointing out that this is original choreography. âhis movements are quite powerful to be singing at the same time,â bom points out and the other idols and ex-idols among the judges nod knowingly, âit sounds like he practiced his pronunciation and diction quite a bit as well. iâm impressed.â
GEUN WONJAE is next on their list. finally, a contestant that focuses solely on rap. j-yoon pays extra attention to this audition, knowing his expertise will be called upon. however, he quickly gets distracted. âsorry,â he looks utterly baffled, âis he under a bridge?â the rest of the judges realize what the backdrop is at that moment and a chorus of giggles erupts among them. âitâs probably good acoustics,â j-yoon tries to defend the contestant he just called out, seemingly embarrassed on the boyâs behalf. âheâs not bad. it would have been nice to see a rapper use original lyrics instead of covering someone elseâs, but thatâs not really an issue to be an idol.â
the next audition is another vocalist; JUNG JOOMI is singing an original song. for a moment, the camera pans to jihun who looks skeptical at first. but as the piano begins playing, a hush falls over the judges. itâs as if they feel something powerful from joomiâs audition, something raw and personal that they havenât seen from the other contestants so far. theyâre quiet even as the clip comes to an end, no one wanting to break the spell that theyâve been placed under. finally, bom speaks. âhe has an incredible voice,â she gives the compliment freely, without any critique. itâs how the others know that joomi is very good.
âitâs going to be hard to follow that act,â yuna looks through the list of the auditions yet to be reviewed, looking a bit sorry for the next name on the list. and indeed she was right to pity him; the next three contestants all are a complete bust with laughable off-rhythm dancing and pitchy singing. theyâre starting to wonder if theyâve exhausted all of the talent among the auditions when the next clip plays.
âthis next one better be good,â jihun grumbles, looking thoroughly annoyed that their time has been wasted with so many poor auditions. LEE NOEL is next and yoojungâs eyes widen as he realizes what song the boy is performing. âthis is a girl group song,â he points out. jihun barks out a laugh, but ran, yuna, and bom all look charmed by the young manâs performance. âheâs not bad!â yoojung smiles, âi like his confidence. itâs not the girliest dance ever, but it still takes a lot of security to perform girl group dances as seriously as a man.â
the next audition is from LEE SEOJUN and the female judges seem to be immediately enraptured by his performance. âheâs singing too,â bom points out, scribbling notes down as she watches. âhe expresses sensuality well,â yoojung agrees, âboth with his movement and his voice. itâs a great performance.â bom, always reluctant to only give compliments, adds another thought: âhe should have just focused on one. thereâs too many turns in the choreography, itâs hard to hear him when heâs not facing the microphone. i applaud his effort, though.â
âMATTHEW LUONG,â ran reads off of the tablets as they prepare for the next audition. âthatâs not a name you see around here often.â jihun hums and nods his agreement, âkpop truly has become global.â
itâs clear from the start of matthewâs audition that heâs a skilled dancer with a great sense of performance. âhe might be classically trained,â yoojung points out, âitâs subtle, but thereâs a sense of control that dancers who have taken ballet or contemporary classes have. itâs different from hip-hop. i really admire it.â
âitâs amazing how keen of an eye you have for dance,â j-yoon praises his fellow judge. yoojung seems to get a bit flustered, as if embarrassed that he nerded out too much on the topic.
another dancer is next, MOON JINYOUNG. the women among the group immediately recognize the song heâs performing as a rather sensual beat. âare your ears red?â jihun suddenly teases ran, who insists they are not. yuna and bom are equally as transfixed on the performance. âhe picked a choreography that suits him well,â yuna muses aloud, only to be the next target of teasing from the boys. âno! i mean, heâs long-limbed and the movement of the choreography⌠oh come on, yoojung knows that i mean,â yoojung feigns ignorance and the men laugh again.
the screen cycles through a few more auditions quickly, clearly nothing of value among them. and then they get to MOON HWANG CAMERON.
âoh?â ran is the one who notices the connection. âi think this is the brother of a contestant we saw earlier. saea? they must be a talented family,â
âheâs debuted before too,â jihun points out, looking through the brief information they have on the contestant.
cameronâs performance is a bit short and once again, j-yoon makes it clear that heâs disappointed in the lack of original lyrics from wannabe rappers. âit just feels like a wasted opportunity,â he says. âregardless, itâs clear that cameron has training in this. his flow is quite good even for an idol.â
the next audition they share is from PARK DOHYUN. âheâs cute,â yuna coos as the young man introduces himself. âhe has a microphone on him, thatâs smart,â bom points out, clearly pleased by the attention to detail. it becomes apparent that the production of dohyunâs audition is much more involved than the previous clips the judges have watched. âhe could have a future in creative direction,â jihun points out. all of the judges jump in their seats and then clap and yell in delight when the fireworks go off in the video. âthatâs so clever!â ran remarks. âi think this might be the most memorable performance,â j-yoon agrees.
STEVEN PARK is their next contestant to judge. âhe looks like a doll,â yoojung remarks. the editors add a green face filter over the dance expertâs face and a caption joking about being jealous. however, that cute face completely transforms when he begins to dance to a rather risque song. he has his audience captivated. âi did not expect that,â yoojung seems a bit awestruck. âheâs quite a good dancer. iâd love to see what heâs capable of with a bit more refinement.â
the awe among the judges is short-lived. the clip from the next auditionee is stopped before he even gets thirty seconds into his song. bom physically drops her tablet in disgust, looking around at the other judges in disbelief that the production team would even show them that terrible audition. the next three arenât much better, each taking up a third of the screen for a couple of seconds rather than make the audience sit through the same torture the judges did.
âplease give me a half-decent singer,â bom pleads with the production crew before picking up her tablet again and starting the next audition.
SATO KOUâs performance is the answer to her prayers. he takes a girl group song and completely transforms it into his own in the clip and even jihun is bobbing his head along to the rhythmic playing. âyou all know i donât like to give out compliments,â bom sighs, âbut this is exactly what i needed to hear after the last several auditions. his voice is nice, his pitch is stable. i really canât ask for anything more at this point.â
âi noticed that the next contestant had auditioned for lime entertainment before,â yuna seems to show a particular interest in the auditionees with a connection to her label. âiâm curious to see.â SEO JUNHOâs audition clip plays across the screen with the judges mostly quiet until it finishes. âi see,â is all yuna says. âhis vocals arenât that good,â bom points out. âitâs a shame he didnât focus on performing one skill well instead of three skills mediocrely,â j-yoon shares his thoughts. âhe wasnât bad. but i wasnât impressed.â
up next is YEOM SARANG, a name that jihun recognizes. âhe was part of our company,â he explains to the other judges, âbut i donât think he was ready to be a trainee at the time. itâll be interesting to see how heâs grown since then.â
sarangâs audition stands out immediately. while heâs not the first to perform a girl group song, heâs definitely the most sensual of the other boys who have performed feminine dances so far. âhis technique isnât good,â yoojung admits, âbut his expressions are incredible. he reminds me of some of the trainees iâve seen at our company. they work hard to master that sort of expressiveness.â ran nods her agreement with her artistâs judgment. âheâs good-looking too,â she remarks.
at last, the judges get to the last audition tape on their list. âfinally,â jihun sighs. ran swats him gently. âbe nice,â she scolds. âeveryone worked hard today.â ZHOU AREN RENYI is their final contestant to review and his audition begins playing without any delay. âi think i can say iâm glad we ended on a high note,â bom nods her approval as the clip finishes. âhe needs work. a lot of work, actually, but his basics are solid. itâs clear he has a good sense of musicality.â
and with that, itâs up to the judges to decide who exactly they invite to participate in the show. the scene cuts away to the exterior of the building again, now with the sun setting in the background, and the captions promising to come back another day.
RHEE JIAN appears on screen dressed in a red pantsuit, cue cards in one hand and microphone in the other. the camera pans to bom, a former groupmate of the emcee, who is visibly excited when she shouts out jianâs old stage name. all six judges are seated in a neon pink and blue set, comfortable behind a desk while jian announces from a stage decorated just as brightly.
âhello judges, special judges⌠bom unnie!â jianâs professional demeanor cracks as she waves her cue cards to her old friend with a big grin. âand of course, welcome to all of you tuning in to NEXT GEN! letâs introduce the twenty-one contestants who will be competing for contracts with the biggest names in kpop.â
one by one, the contestants names and faces appear on screen, ordered from âlast placeâ to âfirst placeâ based on the judgesâ initial evaluation.Â
theyâve gathered all of the participants into the studio and the judges and emcee alike are sure to give them a round of applause for making it this far. âthere were thousands of videos sent in. yours stood out to the judges and weâre excited to see how you can grow and expand your skills throughout the duration of this program.â jian announces.
ânow,â the music and lighting changes from bright and cheery to dimmer and more serious. âiâm here to announce your first mission.â she pauses, looking over the group of participants as they hang onto her every word. âour lovely judges have already evaluated you based on the skills that you showed in your audition videos. however, not all of you sang, danced, and rapped; most of you only performed one or two of those skills. and we donât know how many takes or how long you practiced to record those. so, for your first mission, we will be evaluating you a second time. this time, youâll all be performing the exact same song.â
jian gestures behind her to a large tv screen. two unnamed dancers, one male, one female, appear on the screen wearing simple black sweatpants and white shirts. the song that the participants will be expected to perform starts playing and the dancers demonstrate the choreography that theyâll be expected to learn.
âalso,â she continues, as if the prospect of a second evaluation wasnât enough, âour program has been invited to record a performance to be broadcasted on mcountdown. you all will be performing my turn together, but with so many participants... we need to choose our centers. the male and female contestant who are ranked the highest by our judges will each be awarded the center position in our music show performance. exciting, right? whoever wins center positions are sure to gather a lot of love from the fans.â
âis it scary?â jian looks around the crowd of young people and the camera zooms in on some of the more nervous faces. âdonât worry. you have all this week and help from our special judges to help you improve and put on the best possible performance for our main judges. we want to see how fast you can learn, and where your baseline really is without camera effects or editing.â the camera seems to focus on park dohyun, as if this mission is his fault for having so many special effects in his audition clip.
âgood luck, everyone!â jian cheers them on genuinely, âiâll see you next week!â
CONGRATULATIONS on joining the cast of participants for the first season of NEXT GEN!Â

the day of the evaluation⌠captions overlay the scene of six judges finding their way to their seats in a relatively plain set, a small stage before them obviously prepared for the contestants theyâre here to judge today. YOON JIHUN is the first to enter with SEO RAN close behind, idly chatting with YOOJUNG who enters with her as they find their seats at the judgesâ table. J-YOON is next to enter, greeting his ceo and the other judges before quietly taking his seat. is he the loner of the groupâŚ? the captions assume, though the thought is quickly discarded when YUNA and BOM enter together, arms interlocked as they whisper something between them before taking their seats as well.
âso,â jihun is the first to address the group as a whole, placing his attention in particular on the three judges who also helped train the idol wannabes during the last several days. âwhat should i be looking most forward to today? any surprises?â he clasps his hands together and leans forward against the table as if in anticipation.
a soft smile crosses yoojungâs face. âthereâs a lot of talented dancers in this group. and a lot who are not, but made huge improvements in a very short time. i think some of them will manage to surprise you.âÂ
bom, on the other hand, simply scowls. she says nothing and instead, the editors add in a few clips of a similar glare on her face when working with the contestants during their lessons.
âthere wasnât a big rap part in this song,â j-yoon admits with a shrug. âi think itâs something anyone with a basic understanding of music could pull off. but iâm interested to see what yoojung and bom made of the dancers and vocalists too.â
âshall we see our first contestant, then?â RHEE JIAN appears on stage, ready to introduce the contestants one by one to the judges. âtheyâre all waiting so nervously backstage. after working so hard these last several days, letâs call them in right away.â though her words are surely part of a script, the judges all nod their heads as if giving approval for judgment day to begin.
âthose who ranked low during their auditions have the most potential for growth, so today weâll go in order from who ranked last to first place. which means the first performance of the day will be⌠LEE NOEL,â
a short clip of noel entering the stage and bowing to the judges is shown before being replaced by scenes of a practice room and noel rehearsing with other contestants. itâs group dance practice and the editing makes it seem as if noel is making mistake after mistake and the doom and gloom of the editing is punctuated by tense sound effects and music. âi placed last,â noelâs voice cuts over the sounds before the scene of him in the interview room takes over the compilation of his mistakes. âwhile it doesnât bother me, i do want to prove that i deserve more than last place.â clips of noel practicing with other participants show then; practicing vocals with hyejin and dohyun, and dance with seojun.
the scene changes again, now back to the stage in front of the judges, and noel performs my turn in front of the group. no comment is made by either the judges or the captions and silence follows the conclusion of his performance, the only sound heard the breathing of the contestant who just performed.
âlee noel,â itâs jihun who picks up his microphone first to give his evaluation of the performance after the tense quiet, âdo you really want to be here?â his words are harsh and his expression not much kinder. the camera zooms in on noelâs face for his reaction to the criticism.
âyour performance isnât memorable at all. arenât you nervous? donât you want to do well? your attitude doesnât seem to reflect that. we invited you to participate in this show despite hundredsâ no, thousands of auditions. do you even care?â
âheâs angry,â the microphones catch ran whispering to yuna.
yoojung picks up his microphone next, his expression rather serious though softer than the last speakerâs. ânoel, you auditioned with dance and you definitely improved with practice over these last several days. itâs good to know that you can learn and make adjustments when we give you critique. but thereâs a lot of good dancers in this competition. i donât know if you can surpass them if you want to rise above your current rank.â
âyou should understand that your place on this show is in danger,â bom, as usual, does not mince her words as she speaks directly to the young man.
âas a not very good dancer and far from a good singer, it felt like i had to learn two things at once,â noelâs interview comes back to the screen, sad music playing as if to garner sympathy for the young man. âi guess that was the most difficult thing, everything at once.â
itâs jianâs face that takes up the screen next, smiling to the camera despite the harsh critique from the last performance. âour next contestant is HWANG BADA,â she announces as the camera zooms in on the girl entering the stage, looking a bit nervous as she does so. ran tries to send her an encouraging smile from the judgesâ table.
âthe cameras are a bit nerve-wracking, donât you think?â badaâs voice plays over the scene of her very intentionally meeting the eyes of the judges. âbefore this, i just worked at my familyâs store.â the scene shifts to bada in the practice rooms, rehearsing with hyejin, stevie, haein, and in the group lessons. âiâm going to give it my all. my performance may not be the best, but itâs definitely my best.â
unfortunately, no sooner does the music start does bada make a mistake. she misses the first beat and the camera focuses in on yoojung wincing at the error. the mistake is played again, though this time it shows she recovers and pushes through. sheâs out of breath, her voice cracks, but she still continues on. the camera focuses on bom, whose expression is hard to read.
âbada,â itâs ran who speaks first this time her voice gentle and words mostly kind, âyou know, right? it wasnât a perfect performance. but what weâre looking for more than perfection is your potential. how much did you improve from the last time we saw you? were you able to take critique, to ask for help when you needed it? this is a program to discover talent we want to sign to our companies and continue to nurture. no one is expecting you to be ready to debut tomorrow.â
âyour voice was better in practice,â itâs bom who speaks next, the editing of the scene alluding to tension as if bom will rip the girlâs performance to shreds. âbut thatâs to be expected. you have a lot to learn still. what i liked about your performance is that despite your mistakes, you did not give up. tenacity is an important trait to have as a trainee and an idol.â
âdid you just say something nice to someone?â yuna picks up her microphone to tease bom, who just smiles and laughs a bit in return. âyou worked hard bada,â yuna congratulates the girl despite the flaws in her performance. âlike the others said, thereâs still a lot to learn. but you seem eager to learn it, and thatâs all we can ask for. great job.â
warm music plays as bada takes her leave from the stage before showing a short compilation of her last several days of training. most notably, a clip of her in tears contrasts a clip of a smiling, laughing face. keep working hard, bada! the captions cheer her on.
âup next, a mysterious man who tends to keep to himself, GEUN WONJAE,â rian announces. the scene changes to a series clips of wonjae sitting by himself during breaks in practice and rehearsing alone.Â
âhe looks tired,â j-yoon murmurs to no one in particular as wonjae takes the stage.
âwas he up all night practicing?â yoojung wonders aloud, the other idols among the judges frowning seemingly in sympathy as they watch the young man ready himself for his performance.
wonjae makes the same mistake bada did, missing the first beat. his whole performance seems slightly off, as if his body is too tired and sluggish to respond the way he wants it to. heâs clearly frustrated by the end of his performance, the cameras catching the way his hands ball into tight fists by his sides.
âbefore we talk about your performance,â ranâs brow knits together as she speaks, seemingly genuinely concerned for the young man, âdid you get any sleep at all last night? we know that everyone is working hard for this show but itâs important to get your rest when you can. when youâre tired, you can make a mistake and injure yourself.â
âi donât think we can say much about this performance, to be honest,â jihun speaks next. âwonjae, we know that you did not show us your best side today. itâs not really fair to judge you based on this. i donât think we can give you a very high score for this but i hope that you take better care of yourself going forward. we want to see the performer we recognized from your audition, not this.â
wonjae is dismissed from the stage and bom lets out a large sigh. âi wish we hadnât started from the bottom ranks, actually. i think iâm wasting my time hoping for a big surprise.â
ânext weâd like to welcome to the stage⌠SEO JUNHO!â jian is shown giving a small round of applause as the next contestant takes the stage. the cameras show him settling into position briefly before changing the scene, now showing his time preparing for this moment. he glares at himself in the mirror while he tries to perfect the routine. shots of the camera crews packing up and leaving while junho continues to practice late into the night are played with the caption he worked so hard for this moment⌠is displayed on the screen. a shot of his notes and annotations of the lyrics is shared with the audience. itâs clear that seo junho is one contestant who is taking this show very seriously. maybe bom will finally get the surprise that sheâs hoping for.
junhoâs performance begins without any long preamble. itâs immediately clear that his hard work has paid off; compared to the last contestants, his moves are much sharper, his voice much more stable. itâs not a perfect performance, but the editors show off his best moves multiple times, cut with the subtle impressed eyebrow raise from jihun himself.Â
âi want to be the first to speak,â j-yoon hardly lets the music fade away before heâs picking up his microphone, âi feel like i need to apologize. i might have been to harsh on your during the last episode. youâve absolutely made me eat my words since then,â j-yoon looks absolutely delighted to be proven wrong by the contestant, a smile lighting up his features despite his apology.
âi have to agree,â yuna speaks next. âi think your performance is the largest improvement weâve seen in a contestant so far. itâs amazing, to be honest. you shone brighter here, with one chance to get it right, than you did in your audition tape with however many takes you put into that. great job, junho. we canât wait to see what you do next.â
âLEE SEOJUN,â itâs not rian who calls his name but rather an unnamed staff member. the cameras are sure to pick up the way he jumps to attention, ready to take the stage in front of the judges. jianâs formal announcement is seen next, and after one more quick moment of seojun looking anticipatory for his turn on stage, finally heâs seen walking out in front of the judges.
âso many people have made this a lot of fun to be a part of,â seojunâs voice plays over clips of him practicing with wonjae, stevie, noel. it shifts to show several scenes with one person in particular, haneul. âmy best friend, haneul, helped, since we practiced together as much as possible.â a soft filter and equally soft music plays as one last clip of the best friends practicing together is shown. a clip of seojun smiling softly in the interview room finishes off the segment.
with the weekâs recap completed, itâs time to see the young manâs performance. itâs clear that heâs a confident performer on stage, his movements sharp and voice clear despite the choreography. even bom is seen nodding her head as she jots notes down about the performance. âi think weâre finally just getting to the better contestants,â she murmurs to her neighbor.
seojunâs performance comes to a close and a short round of applause is held for him. jihun picks up his microphone first. âto be honest, i think that this is the most complete performance that weâve seen so far. youâre a strong dancer and while your vocals could use some work, they didnât suffer terribly despite the dance. you did a good job.â
âi agree,â yuna nods along with jihun before chiming in, âthere were a couple little pitch and support issues but nothing that some practice couldnât fix. i think we judged you too harshly in the auditions. you definitely shine on stage, lee seojun. great job.â more happy music plays as seojun takes his leave from the stage and the judges look pleased with what theyâve been seeing so far.
the show must move along and jian is already announcing the next contestant to the stage: MOON CAMERON. he smiles as he greets the judges again and the camera focuses in on ran, who canât help but smile back. âyou think heâs cute, donât you?â jihun teases her despite her pushing him away playfully and denying all accusations. âitâs interesting to have siblings on the show, thatâs all,â ran insists.
scenes of a practice room where both siblings rehearse is shown before cameronâs performance can start. âi canât let myself be too shown up by my little sister,â he says as the screen shows him playfully scolding his sister. âwhy did i find out you auditioned by seeing you on actual television?â
âseeing her throw her all into this has really pushed me to do the same,â a shot of cameron in the interview room is shown next, camera zooming in on that soft, brotherly smile he has on his face whenever he talks about his little sister.
cameronâs performance begins next, displaying excellent command over the stage that clearly comes from a place of experience. most notably, he sends a wink in the direction of the judges. yuna, ran, and yoojung all exclaim out loud at the gesture. âthat was cute!â ran gushes and jihun only nudges her again to tease her lightly. the performance wraps up and all of the judges seem to have enjoyed it thoroughly despite it being the fifth time theyâve heard the same song.Â
âyou have much more experience than most of the other contestants in this show,â j-yoon speaks first, struggling to be serious despite the lingering smile from enjoying the performance so much. âto be honest, i think weâre holding you to a higher standard than the others. iâm not sure if thatâs fair but we do want to see your max potential. you still have room to grow.â
âi think i speak for everyone when i say that we thoroughly enjoyed your performance,â yuna speaks next. âitâs fun to watch a performer who looks so at home on stage. thereâs some issues with your singing that iâm sure bom will want to address,â the camera shows bom nodding briefly before returning to yuna, âbut overall, a good show.â
as cameron is dismissed, the judges check their cue cards for who comes next despite jianâs announcements. âYEOM SARANG,â the emcee announces and the judges begin murmuring among themselves.
âi think heâs the best looking of the male contestants,â yuna comments.
âyes, but a pretty face does not an idol make,â bomâs stern manner never takes a break.
that said, itâs clear that sarang is popular among his fellow contestants. clips of him practicing with others rather closely are played and the captions and editing seem to be jokingly implying that even his fellow male participants have a crush on him. they show him winking at matthew, working closely with jinyoung. âi really enjoyed learning not only from the coaches, but from the friends iâve made here as well,â sarangâs voice carries over the compilation of clips.
more important than friendship is his turn to perform, however. he captivates the judges, even jihun neglecting to write too many notes as he watches and listens to the young man give his all into his performance of my name. âiâm confident in what i showed,â sarangâs voice can he heard again as he holds the finishing pose.
âlet me be the first to speak,â yoojung is the first to pipe up once the spell has worn off. âsarang, you clearly have a lot of untapped potential and i think this particular song was a great opportunity for you. it suits you well. however,â the camera zooms in on sarangâs face for a reaction, the sound effects tense as if yoojung is about to drop a bomb on the situation. âyou dance style did not suit the choreography at all. if youâre going to debut in a group someday, you need to be able to mold yourself to the concept. i didnât always feel that i suited all of a.mazeâs concepts, but they needed me to, so i did. you need to learn the same,â
âwhile i agree with yoojung,â yuna adds to the conversation, âi do want to make sure we commend you for your stage presence and performance overall. a great job, truly.â
if sarang was popular, then PARK STEVEN is basically a celebrity among the trainees. jianâs voice can be heard announcing his turn to perform as the camera shows him going around and greeting all of his friends backstage still waiting for their turns. next genâs social butterfly, reads the captions. various scenes of steven working with other trainees, comforting them, crying with them can be seen.
âiâll give it everything i got. no regrets from me!â stevieâs voice plays as he takes his place on stage. he begins his performance when prompted, the camera occasionally cutting to yoojung who nods, j-yoon who scribbles something down, and yuna who seems fixated on the performance with rapt attention. he finishes with a large smile and ran can be seen smiling back.
someone who is not smiling, however, is bom. âsteven,â she speaks first among the judges, âi said it before and iâll say it again. you need to take this competition more seriously.â she fixes him with a rather stern look and doesnât stop there, âthis is not daycare. weâre not here for you to have a playdate with your friends. when we scold you, itâs because we know you can do better. you should be doing better than this.â
a clip plays of stevie in the practice room, trying to lift his leg behind his head when he shouldâve been rehearsing. suddenly his social butterfly tendencies donât seem to be as much of an asset as they are a distraction.
âi have to agree with bom. youâre a good dancer. if you want to be a backup dancer and support our idols on stage, thatâs fine. but thatâs not what this competition is for. i hope to see more improvement from you moving forward,â yuna explains to the young contestant.
after so many male contestants, finally another female contestant is ready for her turn in front of the judges. âup next,â jian announces, âweâll see RYU EUNKYUNG,â a shot of the girl raising her fist and mouthing a silent cheer is shown as she takes the stage.Â
âover and over weâve worked on this and youâre still getting it wrong,â the scene changes to eunkyung getting scolded by one of the coaches. in the next series of clips, itâs shown how many times sheâs forgotten the lyrics or made a major mistake. âsomehow it all goes out of my brain when i start to dance,â eunkyungâs own voice is heard as she makes yet another mistake on screen. will she be able to pull it off? the captions question her abilities, drawing tension as once again sheâs shown on stage in front of the judges.
her performance begins. it seems that the whole world is watching with their breath held as they wait to see if sheâll make a mistake again or not. what she does instead is make little modifications to the choreography. she cups her hands against her face to send a heart instead of the âvâ pose and a shot of ran cooing at the modification is shown before returning to eunkyungâs performance. the line she struggled the most with is coming, though. j-yoon leans forward in his seat, eyes narrowed as he waits. not only does she not flub it, she nails it. a sigh of relief seems to fall and j-yoon sits back, nodding his approval.
âyou had me worried, eunkyung,â he speaks after her performance is finished, smiling now that itâs all over. âiâm glad you were able to work out your issues with the lyrics. overcoming obstacles is an important part of breaking into this industry. youâre going to have much more difficult challenges than this going forward.â
âto be honest, i think youâre center material,â ran speaks up, âi know, i havenât said that to anyone else yet. youâre confident and while your skills could use some work, youâre doing an excellent job all things considered. keep up the good work.â
âso many cameras,â the translation of SATO KOUâs statement is shown in subtitles on the screen. the scene changes this time to kou in the interview room, where he once again says the same thing: âthis is a lot of cameras.â is he camera shy? the captions question.
âweâre looking forward to kouâs performance,â jian announces. earlier that week⌠the captions interrupt the performance with a scene of the boy in a practice room, clearly frustrated even before he exclaims âi canât do it!â clips of kouâs mistakes in dance practice play one after the other, highlighting all of his many errors. âi just wasnât born with the ability to dance, you see. see? my arms just wonât listen to my head.â
âiâve been practicing like crazy,â kouâs voice is heard while the camera returns to the scene in front of the judges. âi think iâve improved a lot. at least i wonât look like an idiot on stage⌠i hope.â
the boyâs face lights up as he begins his performance and the judgest watch, paying careful attention to him. yoojung in particular seems anxious, having seen the boy in practice not all that long ago. âplease donât mess up,â he murmurs, barely loud enough that the microphones can pick it up. thankfully, kou doesnât make a mistake and completes the performance without any major catastrophe.
âyou had me so worried,â yoojung laughs the tension away as he addresses the contestant. âiâm glad that you were able to pull it off in the end and i hope that this is the end of your dancing woes. itâs a skill that you absolutely need if you want to be an idol. please, keep practicing.â
âi wouldâve liked to see more improvement from you, though,â jihun remarks, a slight frown on his face. âyouâre a decent singer, kou. but i feel like you just got lucky with your dancing here, based on what yoojung was telling us earlier. i hope that you can prove me wrong and show that it truly was skill.â
a scary contestant is next, the captions, in cold, shivery effect, appear on screen. âif iâm making you cry, you should quit now,â LEE NAYOUNGâs voice can be heard. âhave you been practicing outside of lessons at all? do you even have your sheet of the lyrics? what are you doing here?â clips of nayoung confronting various contestants are played on screen. sheâs scarier than bom, the captions claim, showing a side-by-side shot of bomâs glare compared to nayoungâs.
âplease welcome lee nayoung to the stage,â jian announces the contestant dutifully. unlike the scary clips from earlier, nayoung is all smiles to the judges as she greets everyone politely. it turns out that she has a reason to scold the other trainees, her performance goes off not quite flawlessly but clearly more skilled than many of the contestants before her.
âdid you know that people are saying youâre scarier than i am?â bom addresses the girl with the slightest hint of a smile on her face. âi was worried that you would be all bark and no bite. iâm pleased that you have the skill to back your words up. you could practice your stability more. but overall, good job.â
âi would caution you to try to get along better with the other contestants,â ran frowns into her microphone, âwe understand this is a competition. but if youâre going to join one of our companies, we need to know that youâll be a good fit with our current trainees. if you canât get along with anyone, weâll have reason to be concerned.â
LEE JINAEâs performance is next. it seems to breeze by with no context at all. âit was entirely unmemorable,â jihun points out to his fellow judges, who seem to agree. no one can even remember what she practiced all week.
completely on the opposite side of the spectrum is MIN HYEJIN. as jian announces her name, clips of her practicing with several different contestants play across the screen. matthew, noel, haein, bada, nayoung, saea, kou, and of course stevie are all seen practicing with the girl at different times. if stevie was the social butterfly of the boys, hyejin takes the title for the girls. âthere were so many helpful participants and so many i made sure to lend a helping hand to as well,â her voice is heard over the clips.
her performance starts. thereâs hiccups, like every contestant so far, but the cameras seem to focus on them much more than the others. the judges faces donât look as excited about hyejinâs performance as they had about others.
âhyejin,â yuna sighs before continuing, âi understand that you worked with a lot of different people and spent a lot of time helping them. thatâs great, and we love to see that sort of teamwork, but i think your performance suffered for it. you should have spent a little more time on yourself.â
âi want to remind you to mind your expressions too,â j-yoon adds. âyou had moments where you were really good. but then youâd lose that and it was such a shame. i agree with yuna, i think you overextended yourself helping others. you should be more mindful of your time in the future.â
the scene cuts away from hyejin, indicating her segment is over, and instead focuses on jian again as she announces the next performance. âour next contestant ready to show you his skills is CHO HANEUL,â the young man is seen taking the stage and giving a polite bow to the judges. jihun smiles and nods approvingly; it seems he cares very much about the manners and attitude of all of the participants.
âif iâm really honest, i almost didnât audition,â haneulâs voice is heard as he waits for the music to start. âi keep thinking if i should have done this or not,â clips of his practice sessions, including a sweet hug with stevie, play across the screen, highlighting all of the highs and lows of the last several days. âbut might as well do my best while iâm here, right?â
the music starts and haneulâs performance begins. heâs an adept performer, singing and dancing solidly until the short rap part of the song comes up. when his pronunciation is slightly off on one word, the cameras zoom in on j-yoon scribbling something down in his notes.
âhaneul,â j-yoon is the first to give his critique once the music ends and the contestant relaxes from his ending pose, âfirst of all, i want to praise you for trying something outside of your comfort zone. itâs clear you know how to sing and dance but rap was something new for you. that said, to be completely honest, i donât think itâs something you should do anymore.â
ranâs eyebrows raise at the unexpected harsh critique from j-yoon, who ignores the looks heâs getting and continues. âlet me be clear. youâre a good singer and dancer. i donât think you need to rap. i understand it was part of this evaluation but i think going forward it would be better for you to focus on the things youâre already good at.â
âi get what j-yoon means,â jihun nods along as he speaks, âinstead of wasting your time and energy trying to perfect something that honestly doesnât really matter, focus on your other skills instead. i think that will take you farther in this competition. good job, haneul.â
the young man bows politely as heâs dismissed. âi like him,â jihun says aloud.
âdonât go picking favorites this early,â yuna warns playfully, âi might like him too.â
a shot of the waiting room takes over the scene. after a slow pan of the remaining contestants waiting for their turn, the camera zooms in on the next one up: PARK DOHYUN. he seems to be staring off into space. is he awake? the captions question as a sped-up shot of his fellow contestants and staff zipping around the waiting room plays while dohyun himself simply sits still. âlearning the lyrics and dance⌠it was kinda like a bootcamp,â dohyunâs voice speaks over the scene. the editing makes it seem as if heâs a bit dazed and confused, as if the hard work of the past week has completely robbed him of any remaining branpower.Â
in the next moment, jian is welcoming him to the stage in front of the judges. as the music starts, it seems that he hasnât fully snapped out of his trance and misses his cue. heâs flushed in the face when he does get back on track. âis he alright?â ran whispers to yuna, who frowns in concern at dohyunâs performance.
when he finally reaches the end of his performance, heâs out of breath. a few silent moments pass before yoojung speaks. âdohyun, youâve learned a lot in a short time,â he praises the contestant first, smiling encouragingly, âbut to be honest, iâm concerned about you. are you feeling alright? are you ill?â
the camera zooms in on dohyunâs face as if looking for any ailment.
âthis is a competition but you canât be reckless with your body. i understand desperation to be signed and to debut. but certain injuries canât quite be recovered from. youâre just starting to learn dance. donât make it harder for yourself by getting hurt.â
âyoojung is right,â yuna speaks next. âwe see your improvement, dohyun. i canât say youâre a good dancer yet, to be honest. but if you can stay healthy, i think you can become one.â
with dohyunâs performance complete, the scene goes back to the waiting room. the crowd is getting smaller and smaller as more and more contestants take their turn in front of the judges. finally, it focuses in on the next performer: MOON JINYOUNG. he looks nervous or at the very least restless as he gets to his feet to pace, to practice the song and dance one more time, humming the melody as he runs through the movements.
heâs seen walking on stage as jian announces his name. âiâm fine. it just hit me, you know? this is real.â his voice is heard as he looks at the judges with his chin held high, masking any fear that he might have had going into this. jinyoung tests his voice once, twice, before assuming the starting position and waiting for the music to start. unlike the last performer, he doesnât miss his start. but the problems start when he sings. the camera cuts to bom who can barely disguise a rather repulsed expression as she scribbles notes down in font of her.
jinyoung is red in the face much like dohyun had been by the time his performance comes to an end.Â
âi heard that youâre a big fan of yoojung,â itâs ran who speaks first, not yet critiquing jinyoungâs performance but holding a conversation instead. a clip plays of jinyoung and sarang in a practice room together. âi want to be yoojung when i grow up,â jinyoung had said then. the scene returns to ran, whoâs smiling at her fellow judge as she speaks to jinyoung. âitâs clear that youâre a talented dancer. maybe the best weâve seen today. but dancing alone isnât enough to be like your idol. yoojung is a talented singer too. to be honest, you have a long way to go in that area.â
âiâm disappointed, to be honest,â bom speaks up, barely looking up from her notes at the young man sheâs addressing. âyou did better in practice. thereâs no excuse for what you showed us on stage today. if you want to continue in this competition, you need to be much better.â
the humiliated contestant bows as he says his farewell to the judges, bright red in the face. even he doesnât look satisfied with his performance.
âup next,â jian is the center of the screen again, smiling as she reads the name off her cue card, âMOON SAEA, our little sister.â the scene changes to saea in the practice room, first bickering with her actual brother cameron, then hanging out with stevie, calling hyejin âunnieâ, and even pouting in the interview room rather cutely. childrenâs music plays in the background, painting the girl with a cute, childish image.
however, that childish image changes abruptly when sheâs shown standing in front of the judges, seemingly more cool and collected than the playful girl they had already shown in practice. as soon as the music starts, the performer takes over. yoojung can be seen nodding approvingly at her performance and even jihun seems to be impressed, brows raised as he scribbles a note down in front of him.
âfirst of all, i want to say that you put on an excellent performance,â jihunâs praise has been increasingly rare for the duration of this show, so the other judges are shown with rather surprised expressions as he compliments saea. âi think you already know and bom will likely say more than me on it but your singing still needs work. still, you held your own. learning these things in such a short time is difficult but you proved today itâs far from impossible.â
âyouâre doing well at rap,â j-yoon adds as well. âis this your first time practicing and performing it? i think with practice and training, you might have a future in it. iâm excited to see what youâre capable of in the future.â
âweâre getting closer to last weekâs number one,â jian takes over again as the show transitions to the next contestant. ânext to perform for our judges is MATTHEW LUONG.â
âiâm very grateful for being ranked in the top ten, let alone the top five,â matthewâs voice is played over a scene of him in the waiting room, anxiously anticipating his turn. âi just was worried that i was going to let people down.â a shot of him approaching the stage is cut off by a practice room scene, matthew attempting to sing the song perhaps for the first time. itâs clear that heâs not yet a vocalist, making many mistakes during his attempt. âi donât know if i want to go for the first place spot,â his voice is heard again, âiâm so nervous that iâm just going to disappoint everyone.â
the scene cuts back to matthew on stage, the judges staring at him expectantly. as the music begins, so does his performance. while his voice doesnât compare to some of the stronger vocalists in the competition, heâs not all that bad and his top five spot isnât undeserved. he seems to lose a bit of strength as the performance wraps up, and yoojungâs sharp eye is sure to catch that. the camera focuses on the judge after the music ends.
âhow long have you been practicing singing?â yuna is the first to speak up despite the initial focus on yoojung. âwas this your first time performing it seriously? you did a good job,â she smiles as she praises the contestant. âit was fun to watch you. it looked like you were genuinely enjoying your time on stage and as an audience member, that makes such a difference. i hope you continue to love performing. that will take you farther in this industry than anything.â
âyour voice needs work,â bom can never seem to just give a compliment. âbut you improved a lot in a short time. you need to work on your control and pitch. keep this in mind.â her words are short but at least they donât seem as harsh as sheâs been on others.
matthew is dismissed and the next contestant is called to the stage, announced by jian with another glowing smile. ZHOU AREN RENYI is looking rather pale in the face as he stands before the judges. âi know that people expect a lot because i was ranked so high. but truthfully, i donât know why iâm ranked so high,â renâs voice is played over a zoomed-in clip of his trembling hands.
âare you nervous, renyi?â jihun speaks before the performance begins. the camera just zooms in on the boyâs nervous face as an answer.
renyiâs performance begins. thereâs obvious mistakes, he stops singing at one point entirely, and bom is seen scowling and writing notes down. ran leans forward in her seat, brows creased in concern. the judges all saw potential in this contestant; they just hope that he can live up to it. and in parts, he does. his expressions are good despite the obvious nerves, even biting down on his lip as the camera catches his face just right. but perhaps most surprising is when he stops dancing entirely near the end, instead singing the high note with full strength. bomâs brows raise in a way thatâs hard to tell if itâs a good or bad thing. he continues the dance for the last bit and all the judges scribble something in front of them.
âyou made an⌠interesting choice,â ran puts it more nicely than some of the other judges might have as they begin their verbal evaluation of renyi. âi understand that youâre not very experienced as a performer yet. but halting your dance so you could sing⌠itâs something that we incorporate into choreography for main vocalists at times, though it wasnât part of this routine.â
âothers were able to sing and dance during that part just fine,â bomâs harsh critique doesnât soften for the clearly nervous boy, though perhaps sheâs not as mean as she could be. âif you want to keep up in this competition, you should try to mimic the good parts of your peers and be better than their flaws. iâm not sure we saw a top three performance from you today.â
when renyi bows, he lurches forward, falling to a knee as he loses strength. immediately, all six of the judges spring to their feet. âare you alright?â yuna calls out to the boy as yoojung tries to escape the judgesâ table to help the contestant to his feet. however, ren excuses himself and skitters away before anyone can reach him. âcan someone go check on him?â yuna asks the staff. someone follows renyi out to make sure that heâs unhurt.
the judges still look somewhat unnerved by the nearly collapsed contestant when jian is announcing the next one up to perform, JUNG JOOMI. âhis skillset is similar to renyiâs,â jihun points out, a small frown still on his face. unspoken worry seems to mingle through the group of judges.
it seems that the boys also have similarities in temperament as well and the scene changes to a practice room, captions explaining that this is the first day of practice for the mission. joomi is crying, stevie comforting him as best as he can. âi honestly⌠i didnât know i could sing before coming on here,â his voice is played over the shot before it transitions to him in the interview room looking at anything but the eye of the camera. âiâm not confident but iâm glad i made it through.â
joomiâs performance is⌠well, itâs hard to say itâs anything close to good. his dance is a mess, his voice falters for the energy put into dancing, and overall itâs rather a disappointing performance from the second place winner. thereâs a long silence between when the music ends and the judges start to verbalize their evaluation of the contestant.
finally, bom is the first to speak. and despite her harsh reputation, her words seem to be a bit softer. âi feel like we should apologize to you, joomi,â she holds the microphone with both hands as she looks directly at the contestant. âyouâre a very talented singer but second place put a lot of pressure on you. i donât think you were ready for that pressure. and we didnât see the singer we all fell in love with today. iâm sorry for that, too.â
ranâs lips press tightly together as if sheâs struggling to find the words as she raises her microphone as well. âtodayâs performance wasnât good. but iâm sure you already know,â she has to be honest with him though it seems that the judges are treating him more gently than theyâve treated others. some contestants require tough love, some require gentle encouragement. âi hope you feel proud of what youâve learned in the meantime. i think you have a lot to learn and a long way to go but i think you can get there eventually. weâre cheering for you, joomi!â she raises her fist in a silent fighting! and yoojung, j-yoon, yuna, and even jihun do the same to encourage the boy in front of them.
as joomi leaves the stage, jihun sighs. âthat was a shame,â he sinks in his seat a bit. âi think you hit the nail on the head, bom. we put too much pressure on him before he was ready. part of developing talent is knowing when and where to apply the right amount of pressure.â
âour final contestant is our number one place,â jian takes over the screen and transforms the dull mood into something more anticipatory, more exciting. âplease welcome to the stage our defending first-place, OH HAEIN!â
the girlâs smiling face is seen bright and cheery as she takes her place on the stage. jihun straightens up again and the rest of the judges shake off their dreary moods to watch with rapt attention. this is the defending champion, the most anticipated performance of the episode. next genâs ace, the captions claim as clips of haein helping other contestants learn and perform their skills play across the screen. she seems adept in everything she does. the editing really hypes up her upcoming performance.
without making the audience wait too much longer, haein is shown again in front of the judges, the music starting. unlike some of the last contestants who didnât live up to their placement, haein does. she smiles through her performance, she seems to shine on stage. the judges are thoroughly engrossed in the performance, watching closely and even forgetting to write down any notes as they simply enjoy the song and dance despite seeing it over twenty times already.
as the music comes to a close, the six judges give the contestant a small round of applause.
âas expected of our first-place,â yuna smiles into her microphone like a proud mother. âhaein, youâre a very talented performer. any critique we have is relatively minor, which is a huge compliment to you and your abilities. i would just say to mind your expressions a little better. you were smiling but iâm not sure you were engaged the entire time. donât forget the audience in front of you. theyâre the ones youâre performing for.â
âwe had a lot of talented performers today,â jihun cautions, âiâm not sure if you can maintain your number one position and be our female center but youâve certainly made it a difficult decision for us. great work today. weâll be excited to see your next performance.â
with that, the last contestant is dismissed and the judges are tasked with ranking all of the performers from first to last yet again. their discussion starts, clips of them moving photos around and commenting on various performances playing while tense music plays in the background.
finally, all of the contestants are called to the stage to reveal the rankings and centers for the mcountdown performance. âfirst, we want to congratulate all of you on completing the mission successfully and safely,â jian addresses all of the participants with a smile. âas much as weâd like to award all of you for a job well done, the judges do have to rank you accordingly and pick our centers. please turn your attention to the screen.â
on a large television screen at the back of the stage, the rankings are revealed one by one, starting by counting down from the top fifteen until they get to number five. then, ranks sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, and twenty are revealed. six contestants remain, five of them at the top, and the remaining in dead last. one by one, five, four, three, and two are revealed until just first and last place are left. both ranks are revealed at the same time.
âcongratulations to SAEA and JUNHO, our official centers!â jian announces the rankings. time is given for the contestants to react to the news and congratulate the winners before the show continues. the contestants are told that the entire group will be performing on mcountdown next thursday, march 9th, and that some of their practice this week will be devoted to running the routine as a group and nailing down the blocking for the various parts. all contestants will record the male or female parts in full and the final song will be released for digital download on the same day as their performance.
âand of course, we have to introduce your next mission as well,â jian smiles at the contestants while the screen on stage changes from their rankings to a title card that reads teamwork evaluation. âyouâve shown us the talents youâre most confident in already but so far, all of our missions have been independent. we want to test how you work together in a team. our judges have split you into six groups based on what they feel your strongest skill is. this evaluation will be our first elimination round with two teams of the same skill going head to head. the winning team will be safe from elimination while the losing team will risk sending some of their members home.â
each team is announced and the songs theyâre expected to perform introduced to them. jian explains that theyâll continue to have lessons with the coaches and that bom, j-yoon, and yoojung will be staying on the program as skill coaches for the remainder of the season.
âgood luck to all of our contestants! remember, weâre looking at you to be the next generation of kpop. show us that you can shine!â the main theme of the show begins playing again as the episode ends.

the episode opens with a long pan of the goyang sports complex and a few quick shots of the various participants as they prepare for a day of fun and games. the teams are introduced to the audience one member at a time, first with TEAM A, each member receiving a solo zoom of their faces as theyâre introduced, followed by the members of TEAM B.
âwe have a competitive group of contestants,â RHEE JIAN remarks, taking up her hosting duties today dressed in a purple tracksuit that matches NEXT GENâs branding colors rather well. whether the wardrobe choice is intentional or a coincidence is never revealed, let alone discussed on camera. âsome who look very athletically talented,â the cameras focus on MOON CAMERON, SEO JUNHO, and LEE NAYOUNG in particular, âand others who⌠donât seem to enjoy sports as much,â thereâs a laugh in jianâs voice while this time the cameras focus on YEOM SARANG, SATO KOU, and JUNG JOOMI.
as the episode progresses, the viewer is taken through the journey of the sports day. while itâs all fun and games, points are earned by the teams as they complete each event. they remain in close standings as they enter the final game, name tag, and itâs a fierce competition that brings out the fighting spirits in many of the contestants. ultimately, TEAM A is announced the winner of the day. their prize? bragging rights, mostly, though theyâre also surprised by a barbeque dinner prepared with help from the staff. TEAM B is given ramyun as a consolation prize and the winning team can choose to share their dinner with them if desired.
ultimately, the day ends as a good bonding experience between all of the contestants, even those on different teams for the day. theyâve all faced similar struggles throughout the competition and the music in the background changes to something soft and sentimental. between scenes of the contestants eating, playing, practicing, and making friends with one another, their voices are heard speaking heartfelt messages.
âi wasnât prepared for how hard this would be, for how much i needed to put into it, and putting my everything into this has tired me out,â LEE NOELâs voice is heard, âitâs been difficult finding energy, it feels like my days keep repeating themselves, like itâs the same every day, with a new song sometimes. âi hope that with the energy you give me i can continue practicing hard, hard so i can improve, so i can show everyone that i deserve this, so i can show myself that i deserve this.â
CHO HANEUL is heard next, his letter overlaid with clips of him and seojun, his best friend. âweâve been through thick and thin together, and whenever i felt unsure, i knew that i could do it since you were there. thank you for being my pillar and thank you for being there and thank you for being my best friend. letâs continue to support each other always and go through the finale and come out successful.â
in perfect response, LEE SEOJUNâs letter is to haneul, and is read next: âi know youâll do well and deserve the best no matter if you think otherwise at times. iâll be supporting you just like i know youâll be supporting me.â
âi know at times i can come across as cold,â PARK DOHYUNâs clips show him slowly becoming friends with the other contestants on the show as his voice his heard over the images. âi donât speak a lot and maybe itâs hard to befriend me, but they have all included me in their own ways and I canât be more thankful for that.â itâs heartwarming to see a shy, almost stand-offish contestant become so beloved by his teammates.
it may be unexpected given her performance on the program so far but a vulnerable side of LEE NAYOUNG is shown on screen as she also reads her letter aloud. âi thought, after my last contract was terminated, that my life was over,â she confesses aloud, âit felt like coming back to whatâŚi was supposed to be doing? i feel like iâm learning so much. i feel like iâm returning to my old self again, but maybe better.â
âfor as long as iâve been alive, youâve been there to hold my hand whenever i was in need of support.â YEOM SARANG speaks next, âi know it hasnât always been easy for you, and for us, but thereâs nothing i want more than to help you carry the weight youâve been sustaining all alone; to support you like you always support me.â he doesnât cry, but the emotion in his voice is tangible even without the viewer seeing his face as he reads, just the clips of him working hard in practice and progressing through the show.Â
âitâs been hard, hasnât it?â says MOON JINYOUNG, ânot just for me, but you too. youâve had to work hard too. harder than me, maybe. at least iâve been chasing my dream. thank you for letting me do this. iâm afraid that when i blink iâll wake up and it will have never happened. iâve met so many of my heroes and so many new friends. iâve learned so much. i donât think i could ever regret this, even though it hasnât always been easy.â thereâs the vague sense that he might be holding back, that heâs not truly comfortable expressing deep feelings publicly, but the sentiment comes across nonetheless.
âi dedicate this letter to my sister seoyoon whoâs back home in australia,â says MIN HYEJIN, a clip of her misty-eyed as she reads her letter aloud briefly appearing on screen before that too is taken over by clips of her progress throughout the show. âi miss you so much and wish i had the chance to come see you. itâs been too long. i love you unnie! thank you again for always being there to show me support no matter what i tried to do. i wouldnât be here trying to pursue my dream again without you.âÂ
ZHOU RENYI clears his throat once before his voice takes over. âdonât laugh, ok?â he requests before continuing, âsomehow iâve made it this far. sometimes i still donât really understand where i am, or how i got here. i never thought iâd be sitting here, doing anything like this. i guess what i really have to say is thank you for supporting me. iâm trying my best here, and i donât know if anything is going to come of it, but youâre like a brother to me, and honestly, i probably wouldnât be here, on this planet still, without you.â
âiâm sure youâre surprised you made it this far, right?â SEO JUNHO speaks next, âwe both know how much more room there is to grow. but i believe in you. i believe you can do it this time. remember what we always say? never give up, never back down. make sure people always remember seo junho.â
MOON SAEA speaks next, the compilation emphasizing clips of her with her brother, cameron, despite her letter being written to someone else. âi want you to know that iâm here now. iâve succeeded in making it this far on next gen.â thereâs a defiance to her words that contrasts the sappiness of some of the previous letters. âiâll make you believe that i can make it as a dancer, and as a performer again.â
âlike most families, we donât always agree the same or have the same opinions,â MOON CAMERON naturally is heard next, the compilation naturally flowing to focus on him more than his sister. âi canât thank my parents without thanking my sister as well. I am lucky to have her by my side. she is a pillar for me and keeps me going because I would never want to disappoint her or mom and dad. if i want the best for them, i have to also try my hardest.â
finally, JUNG JOOMI reads his letter to himself. âyouâve come a long way in a few months. you went from not caring what happened to wanting to make the people that believed in you proud, determined to do your very best. you sang notes you didnât know you could. people like you. most days thatâs still hard to believe, but some days itâs not, and there are a lot more of those days now than there were before.â the young manâs shuddering breath and the way he holds back his tears is heard as the scene changes to joomi in the interview room, reading his letter. itâs the final clip of this compilation. âthank you for not giving up.â
the screen fades to black and a moment of silence is left for the viewer to absorb and process the emotions of all of the contestants who shared their heartfelt messages. a short message fades into view: thank you to you, the viewer, for supporting all of the contestants in their journey.
finally, the scene changes back to jian on the next gen stage. âthe next episode will be our finale,â she announces, presumably in front of all of the contestants remaining. âyouâll be performing one of three original songs chosen for you by our viewers. letâs reveal the teams now.â
member by member, the three teams are revealed to the viewer with a short clip of the demo tracks to remind everyone what they voted on.
âthis is your last shot at impressing not just the judges, but also the audience who will be voting for you and helping to decide the winners,â jian cautious the contestants, âwork hard and put on your best possible performance. the contestants who end up in the top three positions based on a combination of audience votes and judgesâ evaluations will be offered a trainee contract to any company they choose.â
âthatâs not to say that no one else will be offered a contract either,â she advises them, âthe runner-ups will be offered contracts to one of the three companies. so everyone, do your best! we look forward to seeing you on stage!â
with that, my turn begins playing and the episode comes to a close.
congrats on surviving episode four of next gen! updated rankings can be found here.Â
