In the late 1960s, Ferris traveled across the Mississippi Delta and rural areas, using portable equipment to record, photograph, and film blues musicians, gospel singers, quiltmakers, storytellers, and everyday life. His work captured raw, intimate performances in juke joints, homes, farms, and churches—such as 8mm footage from a rural Mississippi church service in 1968. He focused on the Delta blues tradition, preserving voices like those of unheralded artists who embodied the region’s soulful expression of hardship, joy, and resilience.
