BBB song of the day: Spoken For
so i very recently listened to Spoken For ft. Kasane Teto for the first time. oh my god, why did i wait for so long. to start, i love how throughout the song they build up everything more and more. it starts 'simple' with the first chorus being relatively short and although not necessarily joyous, very much so hides the darker meaning of the song. then, the second immediately dives so much farther into it, the vulgarity, the self hate. the general darkness of it. and the building and building culminate in a beautifully cathartic 1 minute and 20 seconds of the bridge into the third chorus blending together under the main melody, only interrupted by the "baby make me something 'fore i get that call!" before immediately picking up again at the same pace with no reset, just keeping it going. the rise of instrumental and Teto's volume and the desperation in her voice (this and the deep breaths are so impressive, flavor foley are artists.) and the way it seems to end unceremoniously after the third chorus possibly implying that she gave into the dark thoughts. unlike the big show of the rest of the song the end is the one moment of quiet, marking teto's freedom? silencing? possible suicide? it is dark but i like that there is not really a resolution to it. no verse could possibly resolve the deeper issues at play here. some smaller notes. i alluded to it earlier but the way they give teto tone, especially during the second verse. also about the second verse: how they express apathy towards the world and disgust towards self. it is, unfortunately relatable, and it to a slightly uncanny version of the backing from the first verse (i believe it is missing an instrument? but i cannot tell) i feel like could be getting at how often people suffering will just say that they are okay. sometimes even subconsciously say it. even if you acknowledge you are suffering it can be so hard to truly express it, to address it with the severity you need.
i had more things to say and more depth to this but finding time to write this post took so long i forgot, and i just want to post tgis now because i am starting to feel Not Well. teto is so cute in tbe rythm heaven artstyle goodnight new york city
