“Oh my lordy. Epic. Majestic. Essential. . I don’t remember exactly how old I was when I heard this – 13, 14, 15? But it fair blew my mind. I had it first on cassette, copied from a friend of my brother’s. It introduced me to the world of blues, as well as pure rock and roll. Listening to it again, it brings me immediately back to playing When the Levee Breaks over and over and over again on my Walkman knock-off walking home from school. Something about the drums on that track transported me, excited me, and tuned me into beauty of the perfect percussive sound forever. . Led Zeppelin always were a curious beast. Part American Blues, part English Folk, arguably responsible for inspiring heavy metal with Page’s power riffs and Bonham’s intense LOUD drumming, whilst singing about spiritualism, religion and mystical mythology. This album is arguably also their pinnacle achievement, but not just because of the infamy of Stairway To Heaven, every aspiring guitar player’s guitar shop tryout track. No, its because it encapsulates everything they ever tried to do in one place. The blues, the classic rock and roll chords, the folky acoustic ballads (Sandy Denny lending an authentic voice here on The Battle of Evermore) and funky riff rock (Misty Mountain Hop) which was to develop further in the next album Houses of the Holy. It’s got it all. . But most of all it’s got their fantastic take on the blues tune When The Levee Breaks. They turn it into something apocalyptic. And it’s this track, the closer, that I argue elevates this record to its epic, majestic and essential status...” .
