                   there are times when dick thinks nothing has changed. that when bruce wayne looks at him he sees a nine year old in a domino mask and green shorts hellbent on finding tony zucco. the kid who broke his chandelier, who cried at his parents funeral.    he sees his sidekick.   not a partner. not an equal, maybe not even a son. just another coworker he trusts just enough to get the job done.                    dick’s older now to realize that isn’t it.   but dammit if bruce wayne doesn’t test his newfound maturity sometimes. dick only holds back the eye roll considering they’re in public, and as far as the gossip rags know--- never been stronger.   prodigal son returns and all.   bruce wayne and his adopted, shorter bruce wayne. whatever. dick was born to perform anyway.         “ has that line ever worked? ”           it’s said with a smile and a glass of sparkling cider brought to his sober lips. it has. with who bruce is, of course it has because in the end, it will always be   his   way first. but dick wants to keep the peace tonight.       batman has a new robin.        dick won’t make the same mistakes as last time. he and bruce   HAVE   to be better. if for nothing else, than for tim.    they’re far enough from crowds dick doesn’t have to speak entirely in metaphors or code, but he was raised by batman, love it or leave it. he keeps names out of it.               “ the big speech is up next. i’ve seen caterers using the east hallway without trays, and three of them were on o’s rundown. lead the way and i’ll follow. ”         family is about a lot of things. sometimes, it’s even compromise.

          edward  watches  the  shrinking  image  of  the  escaped  criminal  disappear  from  sight ,  &  manages  to  take  a  deep  breath .   he  fixes  the  lapels  of  his  jacket ,  smooths  back  down  his  hair ,  &  tries  to  calm  his  nerves .   logically ,  of  course ,  he  enjoys  his  life  as  a  private  investigator .   but  sometimes ....  oh ,  sometimes ....
