why aren't you scared of me ?
The room feels warm and sweet, a pinch bubbly on the back - end like the wine had been at dinner; it wraps around Nesta’s shoulders like a tender embrace, if she were familiar with such a gesture– and she supposes, because she decidedly isn’t, that had she the frequent pleasure of such a thing, it would certainly feel like this. The House holds her in a way that must be maternal, another concept far out of Nesta’s reach but that she thinks she can glimpse if she tilts her head and squints one eye, picturing what she longed for before she knew better than to hope. It’s funny, she thinks; Fae magic, that is, with its peculiarities and rules and non - rules. She doesn’t really know what to make of a building which cares for her in all the ways she could never deserve, but maybe it speaks to her own mental state. Sometimes she swears it’s all in her mind, but the bemused expressions from her housemates whenever a book appears in her lap or a slice of cake at her elbow after every meal including breakfast, seemingly out of nowhere at all, refutes any ideals of a lacking constitution.
Nesta fancies herself a ballerina tonight, pressed to her tiptoes and reaching her arms toward the ceiling. It is half of a sloppy soubresaut, but she thinks if she’d made to leap, there’d be a mess of all her limbs strewn about the floor. At least, maybe. @bastardborne is close enough to reach a hand above her descent as if he means to assist her in a fouette except he is too tall; her fingertips can’t even graze his hovering palm, try as she might to make an attempt. Flat on her feet again, she is forced to tip her chin up and strain her neck to meet his gaze. It’s only then she realizes how close they are to each other.
For all his towering posture, Nesta can still make out the smolder of a thin line of red rimming the golden haze of his eyes. He looks at her with the inverse of an eclipse and she feels all the heat of it somewhere in the vicinity of her solar plexus. I am terrified of you, she elects to withhold from him. It would hurt him in the worst ways if she gave that up to him, but it would hurt her far more because she knows he’d understand what she really means by it. I am terrified of what you could do to me, knowing me as only you know me. Cassian holds her gaze and lowers his arm; Nesta can’t help reaching for his wrist before he can so respectfully retreat from her.
He is not a gallant prince on a white steed climbing a tower to kiss her awake from a nightmare where she is alone forever in a room full of people laughing triumphantly at her wake. But then she’d never really fancied the stories about princes with ornamental wives pretty enough for thrones but not pretty enough to love. Nesta did not daydream about her future reality. Nesta has always coveted devotion in all the pages she devours; the beast was the girl all along and her lover always enamored despite, or maybe because of, her fangs and claws. The sun swallows the wicked stepsister and turns her into rain. It’s always a cleansing, it’s always brand new.
Nesta releases Cassian’s arm, but only enough to slide her fingers across his rough palm and between his empty spaces. He looks like she’s just bowled him over. Terror grips her by the spine, but his face keeps a gentler pressure and eases the ache behind her breast. ❝ Would you like it if I was? ❞ He’d only looked stricken before. He looks positively devastated now. Nesta lifts their joined hands and presses the backs of his knuckles to the blade of her cheekbone, hoping it doesn’t feel too familiar in its punishing sharpness against his skin. ❝ I am scared. All the time. ❞ Coward that she is, she lowers her wine - heavy lashes and looks at the slash of that angry hollowed scar across his throat instead of his eyes. ❝ But less so when I’m with you. Is that bad? ❞
