Duplex Strainers Suppliers in India: What to Look For
In pipeline filtration, there are systems where you can afford to shut down for filter maintenance β and systems where you absolutely cannot. If your process falls in the second category, a duplex strainer is not optional. This post explains what duplex strainers are, how they work, and what to look for when evaluating duplex strainer suppliers.
What makes a duplex strainer different?
A duplex strainer contains two identical filter baskets arranged in parallel, connected by a changeover valve. During normal operation, flow passes through one basket. When that basket needs cleaning, the changeover valve redirects flow to the second basket β without interrupting the process. The first basket can then be opened, cleaned, and put back on standby, all while the system runs continuously.
This makes duplex strainers essential in:
Crude oil and fuel handling systems
Continuous process chemical plants
Offshore and marine pipeline systems
Cooling water circuits in power plants
Changeover valve type β The changeover mechanism can be a three-way plug valve, a diverter valve, or a rotary valve body. Each has different maintenance implications. Ensure the valve is accessible and that the transition is smooth (no pressure surge).
Equal flow capacity β Both sides must be hydraulically identical. A poorly designed duplex with flow imbalance causes one basket to blind prematurely. Ask duplex strainer manufacturers about their flow analysis and validation process.
Bleed/vent connections β During switchover, the standby side must be vented and pressure-equalised before the valve is turned. Proper vent and drain connections are essential for safe, smooth changeovers.
Differential pressure indicator β Every duplex strainer should have a differential pressure gauge or switch across each basket. This tells operators when a basket is approaching its hold-up capacity and a changeover is needed, rather than relying on scheduled intervals.
Material and end connections β Same criteria as basket strainers: line size, pressure rating, fluid type, material. Flanged connections are standard for duplex configurations in larger sizes.
Quality documentation for duplex strainers
In regulated industries β oil & gas, petrochemical, pharmaceutical β procurement teams should require from duplex strainers suppliers: material test reports, NDT (non-destructive testing) reports, hydrostatic test certificates, weld procedure qualifications (WPS/PQR), and post-weld heat treatment records if applicable.
Flometriq Filtration, based in Chennai, manufactures and exports duplex strainers in sizes from 1" to 36"+, in carbon steel, stainless steel 304/316, alloy steel, and HDPE-lined configurations.
