an anon asked me how to make gifs, here’s a basic gif tutorial. so i’m using frame animation, I’m making it as simple as possible. I’ve tried to explain it as best as I could but if you guys have any questions, don’t be afraid to send me an ask on here or in my main.
I’m using photoshop.
I recommend using vlc is the best player for Importing video frames to layers. It’s very simple.
anyway, feel free to like/reblog this post!
after downloading your video, go to file > import > video frames to layers and select the video that you want to gif.
drag the little white arrow keys to mark the start and end of the scene you want to gif.
so make sure the ‘limit to every 2 frames’ box is unchecked.
crop to whatever size you want. tumblr’s post dimensions are 540px wide. for 2 column gifsets, gifs should be 268px.
I’m going to crop mine to 540px for 400px.
you need to resize your gif. go to Image > Image size and fill in the dimensions you’ve chosen to cutting.
make sure that you resample it to bicubic (smooth gradients).
let’s go to the speed settings, select all frames in the timeline settings and set the frame delay. I use 0.05 seconds.
adds a more natural aspect to the speed, but it depends a lot on the type of gifset you are doing.
one of the most important parts in the process of creating a gif, the sharpen. I’m not going to go into detail here, I have a tutorial just about sharpening, right here.
just click on your gif, then go to filter > convert for smart layers, that basically makes your entire gif one frame.
now save, go to file > export > save for web. these are my export settings:
selective > diffusion > bicubic sharpen.
make sure that the gif is set to loop forever and if your gif is not exceed tumblr’s gif size limit.
you have a basic sharpened gif, that’s a good thing isn’t it? more than we had when we started.
here’s how my gif looks:
one of the most important parts in creating a gifset is the coloring, but as this is a basic tutorial I will not explain it here. you can also try some combinations of my base PSDs and get a coloring like this:

Software I am using : Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended (but those who are not using extended version can also make gifs, ofc. ^_~)
There are two ways to make gifs : through Importing video in Photoshop and through Loading screencap files in Photoshop.
Option 1 : Importing Video in Photoshop
Open the software.
Windows > Animation
File > Import > Video Frames to Layers > Choose the Video you'll gif > Select Range Only, then hold down shift key while moving the slider to capture the part you want to gif.
When you're satisfied with it, click OK.
You've now made a gif, you can must modify it :
Set time delay : Select All Frames on Animation Panel, then set the time delay... (I, personally, use 0.1 mostly)
Resize : Image > Image Size > Set width size x adjustable (vice versa) > OK.
Sharpen and save your gif : Of course you have to sharpen your gif so it will not look shitty same as saving~ A good sharpen and saving settings is a key for a nice quality of gif~ Here's a separate tutorial for it (since we have PS and PS Extended Version). (TUTORIAL)
Option 2 : Loading screencap files in Photoshop
Open the software.
Windows> Animation
File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack > Browse > Choose the screencaps you'll gif > OK.
