Barzin-Watching

Over the release of four albums, Toronto based artist, Barzin has become well-renowned for his explorations into folk and the light side of pop, however following his work composing the soundtrack to the independent film, Viewfinder, Barzin started experimenting with elements of jazz, electronics and rock when he began work on his fifth album, the soon to be released Voyeurs In The Dark. Incorporating these new elements and influences into his already intoxicating sound have create a more cinematic vision, broadening into a more experimental yet no less seductive horizon.

Barzin himself says that it’s often difficult to pinpoint what really inspires a song, however the muse for Watching, the first track to be lifted from the aforementioned album, arrived after watching A Film About Love by Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski, a film about a young man who becomes obsessed with a beautiful neighbour who lives across the street and he begins to watch every night from his own apartment. The film deals with voyeurism, lust and fantasy, subjects that resonated with Barzin when he started thinking about society’s obsession with social media and how people are constantly looking and obsessing over each other’s lives.

The single opens with a shimmering, melodic guitar melody, before a bass, pattered percussion and dreamy synths join the mix laying down a deeply hypnotic, jazzy groove, prior to Barzin revealing a delicate almost fragile croon, that’s complimented further by the enchanting voice of fellow Canadian, Set Feux, who adds an uplifting sparkle to proceedings, bewitching the listener further into Barzin’s brew.

The single is accompanied by a gorgeous video, shot by Micheal Villeneuve that sees abstract images wash over the duo of Barzin and Set Feux, providing the perfect visual landscape to a captivating taster of Barzin’s fifth.
