Leaving her was the hardest thing James had ever done. He turned around, seeing the smaller women laying beside him. His arm snakes around her body, kissing her shoulder. She groaned and pushed her face furthermore into the pillow.Â
“Doll, we gotta wake up. Or Lila will wake you up. “
She complied hesitantly, turning around and pressing against his frame. Her lips pursed against his bare chest. James noticed a small hand reach up from her bassinet. He pulled away from his lover to pick up Lila. She was James’ angel. He was leaving to protect the ones he loved. He pulled her close to his chest, kissing her cheek as she covered her eyes from the morning light. Y/N sat up in their bed and rubbed her eyes. She climbed off the shared bed and pulled the baby into her arms.
“James, do you really have to leave tonight?”
“In order to protect you two, yes.”
She groaned and rocked Lila, reaching toward the dresser to grab her pacifier. He changed out of his t-shirt, placing his uniform on in the mirror. She had been dreading this day ever since he got his letter. As much as she loved how he looked in the uniform, she wishes that he would stay home and spend his years there. She wished that he would stay home.Â
“James, you’re going to miss Lila’s biggest triumphs! Her first words, her first words, her first steps.”
Before she could worry more, James pressed a kiss to her lips swiftly.
“That’s why I got you the camera doll. You’ll have Stevie to help.”
“I love Stevie, I do. But he’s not you.”
James frowned and held her to his chest, her head resting on his heart. A space between them for Lila. They stayed like that for a while before James had to part his way for the day.
She held his hand at the train station, waiting to hear the booming horn of the train. James glanced down at their fingers laced together. He noticed a small tear, falling down her cheek. He turned and kissed her head.
“Doll, we are gonna be fine. I promise. I’m gonna come home and see little Lila and you.”
“But what if you don’t? What if you don’t come back?”
She hadn’t slept in the past couple nights. She worried what life could potentially be if James wouldn’t return.Â
“Hey, don’t say that kind of stuff, darling. Besides, you’re a brave woman. I knew that the moment I married you.”
He leans forward to kiss her one last time but the screeching of the train echos over the station.Â
The train halts and men filed onto the train, saying goodbye to their wives, James slowly leaned over to hug her. She held onto that moment for years after. James kisses her one last time and hugs her tightly. He holds her hips and stays there. He climbs onto the train and looks back as the trains slowly moves. The tears begin to come faster. She wipes her eyes with her thumb and waves. James leans out the window, yelling for her.
“I love you, Mrs. Barnes!”
“I love you, Mr. Barnes!”Â
She laughs as she sees his smile for what could’ve been the last time.
She danced with Lila, now over a year old, in the living room. The girl, giggled as her mother took her hand and danced beside the tree. The muted music coming from the bedroom upstairs.Â
She stops at the doorbell being rung. She stands and walks to the front door, peaking outside. A male figure stood in the cold, his hat over his face. Her nerves get the better of her as she slowly opens the door. She peers out, only showing her eyes.
“Can I help you?”
She noticed the smile peering from under the hat.
“James?”Â
She pulled the door open, a strong gust of wind filling the home. James quickly moves to pick up his two favorite girls up. He laughs and kisses them both on the head. Lila giggles and peers at this man, only being a few months old when he left. He kisses his wife quickly.
“Wait, why are you back? Are you injured?”
Her eyes darts over to make sure he doesn’t have any prosthetics.Â
“I’m the same man, doll. No plastic on me.”
They share another kiss before Lila whines to see this new man. He holds her, pulling her into his chest. He looks emotion, while he holds her. James would look at her photo in his notebook and get emotional on the battlegrounds. He pulls Y/N into his arms and sighs happily.
“I missed my girls.”
Later that night, she brushed her hair in the mirror. Lila laid asleep in the other room. James smiled and watched her from their bed.
“How did you get to come back? They only send fellas back when they’re close to dying.”
“I had some money. Steve pulled some strings for me. Now, come to bed, please. You’re to pretty not to kiss.”
She happily complied and climbed into bed. The two held each other throughout the night. It was the first solid sleep James had gotten in months.
Getting that letter was the worst day. She felt that it was the end of her world, cause it was. The letter was addressed to the house, it was written by a woman named Margaret Carter. She read it, feeling her heart break as she read the news.
James Buchanan Barnes, of the 107th, was not found. Steven Grant Rogers said that Barnes had died honorably. He fought for his country and his wife, Y/N Barnes and their Lila Barnes.
Lila was now 3 years old. The last time she had seen her father was at Christmas. She was only 1. Now she understands certain things. Her mother never thought she’d have to explain this to her as early as she does. Y/N walks into her room, holding the letter.Â
“Lila, sweetie, could we talk?”Â
Lila places down her toy and looks up. Her eyes wander the room as her mother, reaches for her hand.Â
“Lila, do you know about Daddy? About how he’s fighting for us? He’s our superhero, right?”
The innocent girl nods and begins to ramble about her superhero father.
“Honey, you know how he hasn’t come back yet?”
Her eyes welled with tears. The words lingered on her lips. Her body held back the words as it didn’t want Lila to know.Â
“He’s not coming home, honey.”
“Why?”
“Because.. he was a brave man.”
At such a young age, Lila didn’t understand. She wouldn’t until years later.

The night the news was released was a pure shit show. You walked out of your apartment and were swarmed with paparazzi. You had gotten used to it by being close friends with TJ but TJ wasn’t there this time. The questions were screamed at you before you could react.Â
“Mr. Y/L/N, how long have you and Mr. Hammond been together?”
“Is he still abusing drugs?”
“Are you planning on getting married?”
You were frozen in fear. The questions shot like bullets. The news had gotten out. Sure, people knew he was gay but not that he was with you. Before you were labeled as:
“TJ Hammond’s best friend, Y/N Y/L/N” now you were the boyfriend.
You sprinted to TJ as soon as you escaped the crowd. You knocked on his door. “TJ! Open the door, please!” You heard the faint steps behind the door. He opened the door and looked at you, not the usual cheesy smile or smug grin. You move to hug him but he pushes you. “You asshole!” He yells.Â
He turned and walked into his apartment. He paced the floor before grabbing a beer off the counter. You walked into the apartment and closed the door in case of paparazzi. He stopped and looked at you. “I thought we had something, Y/N. You were different than the other guys! You didn’t just want a cheap screw of the president’s son!” The words hurt you. You had to convince him that you didn’t let it slip. That night you cradled him for hours, once he let you actually go near him. You softened his cries and peppered kisses across his face.Â
Now only a month after the news was released, you were still swarmed. You danced with TJ, the world around you falling. The clubs music was faded as you danced with him, your hands on his as you danced like a couple of drunk bastards. You walked out of the bar to be greeted by every gay man’s fear. A hoard of people with signs. Signs with scriptures on them, slogans about homosexuality. You dropped your hand from his. He quickly started yelling things at them. People were capturing videos and taking photos of the outbreak. He screamed slurs at them.Â
“What are we? A couple of fags to you? Am I just a fag! Fuck you! You fucking assholes!” Before he could get physical you pulled him back. You pulled him to your apartment since it was closer. Once you were inside, you dropped to the ground, crying. He looked at you, almost disgusted. He sat beside you. “How much longer can we fucking do this? Let’s just cut it.” You stopped your weeping and darted your eyes to his. “TJ, come on. Don’t say shit like that.” He shook his head. “It would just be easier.” You stood and shook your head. “TJ, I’m not leaving you cause of those fucking assholes.” He walked to you. “Maybe, I’m not gay, I’ve been thinking about it.”
You two argued for hours. “I didn’t ask to deal with this Y/N! I didn’t ask to be called a fag all the time! Why won’t you just let me go?” You turned to face him and shouted. “Cause I love you, you asshole!” You froze, never saying that to his face. You meant it. You cared so deeply for him. You were always the one he’d see first when he woke up the hospital. He stared at you, not moving a muscle. You shook your head quickly. “Shit, I- fuck -” He kissed you quickly and held you against him for a second before pulling away. He had tears in his eyes. “I’m so sorry Y/N.” You felt the words coming on. He was going to cut it off with you. You closed your eyes.
“I love you too, Y/N”
