I saw some pple on TikTok draw MLP characters based on how they remembered them as a child. Kinda like fan art people made of what they pictured the Harry Potter characters as before those movies came out. I thought that was a crazy cool concept bc as a child I pictured/remembered the YJS characters so differently than what they actually are, especially before City of Gold came out. So that gave me the idea to draw how I remembered or even how I drew them as a kid.
Fitz, Jean, and Tumenās drawings look a little different bc I did them a month or so after Jack and Bellās š«¢
I forgot to include this but Jean and Tumen were NOT drawn with justice in their first illustration in the series

I awoke, startled and spluttering, thanks to someone dumping cool water right onto my face. The crew was gathered around me, all watching worriedly as I bolted upright (a big mistake on my part thanks to my still-aching mind) and started coughing. Evidently, I needed to actually be in the water in order to be able to breathe itā¦
āTold you it would work,ā Jack chirped, tossing a bucket aside. He crouched down beside me and gave me a hearty thump on the back. āYe gave us a nasty fright just now, Drystan.ā
āS-sorry,ā I wheezed. āStays were too tight.ā Noticing I could suddenly breathe deeply again, I looked down at myself to find the gown and stays gone, leaving me in just my shift. My mask, too, was gone, though I vaguely remembered ripping that off while we were running back.
āThatās what āBell said as she was cuttinā them off oā ye,ā he told me. āHope you didnāt want tā keep them, because theyāre in the Mississippi now.ā He stood up and held out his hand to me.
Taking it, I let him pull me upright. āThanks,ā I said, my breathing finally coming back under control. Looking over my shoulder, I could see that New Orleans was just a bright speck on the horizon. I turned my gaze back to the others and crossed my arms over my chest. Now that it was wet, the shift didnāt leave very much to the imagination.
āNow that our first mate is alive anā well again,ā Jack chirped, āwhy the blazes is he on our boat?ā He pointed a finger at Tim while looking at me and Fitzy.
āHe helped us,ā Fitzy answered. āThe key you had found wasnāt for the Madameās quarters, but for his.ā As he spoke, he shrugged off his jacket. āHeās apparently been under her control, but was finally able to resist it.ā Coming over to me, he draped his coat around my shoulders, rendering me somewhat decent. I quietly thanked him.
āHe used ones of those dolls to throw Minuit into a fit,ā I elaborated, āwhich let us grab the amulet from her.ā
Tim shrank back slightly as Jack started to circle him, his eyes narrowed in scrutiny. He then came to a halt in front of the lad. āWhatās your name?ā
āT-T-Timothy,ā he stammered. āTim. Tim Hawk, sir.ā
Being called āsirā seemed to appease Jack a bit and a small grin came to his lips. āWell, Mister Hawk, thanks tā yer help, we are now able tā return this amulet tā its rightful protectors once again anā, by doing such, also return our dear friend tā his home. We owe ye our thanks.ā
Timās cheeks reddened. āI-It wasnāt done without ulterior motivation, I must admit,ā he said, shifting slightly and looking down at the deck. āI wanted to get away from her.ā
Arabella lightly patted his shoulder. āThatās understandable, lad. Sheās not exactly the sort oā woman someone wants tā be around.ā She shook her head. āThough, Iām curious: How did ye end up workinā for her in the first place?ā The others nodded in agreement.
āI was making my way from England to Barbados, where my uncle lives,ā he began, rubbing the side of his neck. āI was hoping to live with him as my parents had died in an attack, but then the vessel I was stowing away on made port near the Pantano River.ā
My brow rose. The Pantano was the river that led to Tia Dalma.
āI dared to leave the boat for a little whileājust long enough to steal myself some real food,ā Tim continued. āWhile I was out, a stranger approached me. He looked insane, dressed in his rags with dead snakes hanging about his neck and shoulders. As you now know, it was actually Madame Minuitās disguised form.
āShe grabbed my arm and started to recite my recent life events to me. Told me about the attack and the burning of our houseā¦how I was looking for my uncleā¦She told me that, if I were to help her, she would help me in turn.ā He shook his head. āI was irked, to say the least, and I was about to run away when one of the snakes came to life and bit me, putting me under her spell.ā
Jean frowned. āShe controlled you by way of snake bites?ā
Tim pulled his sleeve up, showing them the various bitemarks and making Arabella gasp in horror. āYes. The venom is what gives her power over a person, but it starts to wear off after a while. She hadnāt bitten me for some days, so I was able to resist her at times, like when I dropped the key for you.ā
āThat monstrous woman!ā Arabella gawked.
āSoā¦youāre the one whoās responsible for stealing the amulet?ā Tumen asked, his brows furrowing. āAnd for turningā¦for turning that ship bronze?ā
A guilty look came to Timās face. āI didnāt want to do any of it, I promise,ā he said. āBut I had no other choiceāliterally. When the venom is strong in your veins, itās like youāre trapped within your own mind, forced to watch as your body is puppeteered by another.ā
I shuddered at the thought. To think she had very nearly done the same thing to meā¦As Tim continued to explain his predicament to the others, I leaned over slightly and whispered to Fitzy, āIām going tā go change.ā
He nodded. āIāll let them know.ā
āThank you.ā
With one hand keeping the coat held shut around me and the other lifting my skirt a bit so I could see, I made my way below deck. I was thankful to find a couple of lanterns lit down here, which allowed me to make my way back to the privacy curtain with ease. Undressing was a quick affair, given half my clothes had already been removed; I folded everything up and set them aside, figuring Arabella could use them in the future.
Before dressing, I used a bit of water to wash whatever powder and rouge that was left from my skin.
Getting dressed in my menās clothing was much faster, too. The slowest part was binding my chest down, but even that was quicker than putting on stays. I didnāt need to do any adjusting of the lacings, nor did I have to do much in the way of adjusting myself; it was a simple matter of making sure to wrap the bandages evenly and not too tight. After that, I pulled on my shirt and tucked it into my breeches, took my hair out of its braided bun, and tied my bandana around my forehead.
And just like that, I was Emil once again.
āThere. Back tā my normal self,ā I sighed, flicking my hair out from beneath my shirt. While it had been nice to be Emilianna for that little while, it had made me realize that I was more comfortableāand more myselfāas Emil. Whether that would change in the future or not, though, only time could tell.
Grabbing my boots, I carried them over to my hammock before going back on deck. By that point, Tim had finished telling the others about himself and was now listening to Jack regale him with the tales of our own adventures.
āā¦Anā then Fitzy here decides tā challenge me to a duel. Can ye believe the audacity?ā He shook his head, ignoring Fitzy, who rolled his eyes. āIt almost didnāt happen because we didnāt have equal swords, but āBell here went anā found an old rapier down in the hold oā the boat, so we ended up dueling.ā
āAnd I very clearly won,ā Fitzy said, his voice dry. āAnd, evidently, it is a good thing I am here, otherwise Emilianna and I wouldnāt have been able toāā
āNuh-uh-uh,ā I interjected, wiggling my finger back and forth. āWeāre not in disguise anymore, Fitzy. Iām Emil again.ā
Tim turned around only to end up gawking at me. His reaction was understandable, given he had met me when I was Emilianna. āW-whatā¦? But howā¦?ā
I chuckled, moving towards the stern, where Jean, Arabella, and Tumen were at. āDonāt worry about it, lad,ā I told him. āI believe Jack was about tā tell you how Fitzy managed tā defeat him in a duel and ended up as part oā the crew.ā
Jack looked like he didnāt know whether to pout or to puff up in pride as I returned the newcomerās attention to him. Whatever he felt, though, he shoved aside and did continue to tell Tim about the start of our journey.
āSo, what happened at the ball?ā Jean questioned once I had sat myself down against the taffrail.
āWere there lots oā people there?ā Arabella asked, her head tilted.
āQuite a few, actually. More than I was anticipating,ā I answered. āFitzy and I did our best tā blend in, which wasnāt too hard. We danced for a while, giving us the chance to look around for Minuit. We didnāt spot her, though, so after we took a quick breather tā recuperate from dancing, we decided it would be best to start looking for her quarters.ā
āYou two danced? What was it like?ā Arabella moved to sit down near me.
āIt was fun. I think we participated in at least five oā the dances,ā I said with a small chuckle. I knew she had never been to a ball, so her curiosity was natural. āThe ballroom was enormous, so half oā it was dedicated to folks dancing, while the other half stood around and watched, waiting for their turn. There was a little refreshment room off to one side, where there were all sorts of drinks and food. The drinks, especially were very much needed after dancing, since it was so warm and humid in there.ā
She nodded in understanding and let out a soft sigh. āThe women mustāve looked lovely, all done up in their formal gowns and costumesā¦ā she murmured.
āHow did you two find Tim?ā Tumen asked.
āWe were able to make out the first part oā the room number on the key,ā I explained. āSo, we went upstairs, found the rooms that began with one, and started tā carefully test each lock.ā
Jeanās face scrunched up slightly. āThat must have taken you ages.ā
I nodded. āIt did. It took even longer because we were trying to be as quiet as possible, just in case the roomās inhabitants werenāt down at the party. We were also keeping a weather eye out for any of the innās staffā¦and good thing we did, because we were almost caught by a maid.ā
Their eyes widened in horror. āHow did you not get caught?ā
A bit of a sheepish smile came to my lips. āBy letting ourselves get caught,ā I said with a shrug. Watching as their shock turned to confusion, I chuckled, though knew better than to tell them the full truth. āWe pretended to be a tipsy couple trying tā make our way back tā our room, but got a little lost along the way. The maid told us we werenāt in the right area and we left down the hall. Oā course, we were actually just hiding until she left, because she also happened tā tell us that we had been at Minuitās private quarters.ā
Arabella gave me a bit of a curious look. āAnd she believed you bothā¦?ā
āBelieve it or not, Fitzy does a very impressive impersonation of a man whoās imbibed in a bit too much wine,ā I snorted.
Tumen frowned, not quite believing me. āYou cannot be serious.ā
āI am entirely serious. He slurred his words just the right amount and even wobbled a bit as we walked.ā
āWhat happened after you two had to walk away?ā Jean asked.
āWe waited for the maid to leave, which didnāt take too long, and we hurried back. We had already tried one door, so we tried the other. Upon opening it, we found Tim instead oā Minuit, and thatās when we came up with plan to get both the amulet and Tim out oā there.ā
āSomething tells me said plan didnāt quite go the way ye had meant it tā go, though,ā Arabella stated with a small laugh. āGiven that the three oā ye were beinā chased by a crowd.ā
I rubbed the side of my neck, another sheepish grin coming to my lips. āAyeā¦the plan was for Fitzy tā find Minuit anā charm her into either leavinā the ballroom orāStop laughinā!ā Jean and Tumen had started to laugh when I said that Fitzy was supposed to charm Minuit and, admittedly, their humorous reaction got me snickering as well. āHeās a fine young man; plenty oā women at the ball were making eyes at him! We were hoping the Madame would as well.ā
āHe can hardly flirt with Arabella, let alone a woman of such high status like the Madame!ā Jean snorted. He continued to laugh despite Arabella giving his arm a playful smack.
āAh, but thatās the wonderous thing about beinā a masked stranger in a room full oā other strangers,ā I grinned. āThe anonymity it brings is capable of immensely bolstering oneās self confidence.ā My grin then faltered. āOf course, our plan didnāt go as we had wanted it to, so we never did get tā find out if he would have been able tā charm Minuit or not.ā
āWhat happened?ā Arabella asked.
āMinuit found me stuffing my face with fruit,ā I answered with a small shrug. āShe was rather glad I was enjoying it over the meat anā cheeses. Not sure why, but she quickly became interested in me and I was about to become her latest slave when Tim threw her into a fit using one oā those dolls. At that point, I grabbed the amulet and Fitzy so the three oā us could get out oā there.ā
āAnd then she ordered her minions to chase after you, which resulted in the crowd chasing you,ā Tumen said, head tilted. āAs well as New Orleans being turned to bronze.ā
I winced slightly. āThe whole city got turned, then?ā
āFrom what Fitz and Tim were saying, all the buildings and streets were turned to metal, but not the people,ā Jean said. āDidnāt you notice it happening?ā
āI kind oā noticed it, but I was more focused on trying to breathe.ā
Tumen looked down at the amulet, which was securely fastened around his neck. āā¦I wonder if thereās a way to turn it back to normalā¦?ā
āMaybe Tim knows?ā Arabella suggested. āAfter all, Madame Minuit seemed to know how the thing works, so he might have an idea.ā
āOi, Tim!ā I called over.
He turned; as he did such, Jack leaned over with a pout, letting me know I had interrupted a good part of his story.
Giving Jack an apologetic smile, I asked, āDo you happen tā know how tā undo the amuletās magic?ā
Tim shook his head. āIām afraid not,ā he admitted. āI donāt know much about it, aside from it needing three gems to make it work and that it leads to the City of Gold.ā
I nodded in understanding before motioning for him to go back to listening to Jack. āThanks. As you were.ā
āThereās a bronze stoneāgem?āin the amulet right now,ā Tumen said, looking down at it. āWhich explains why it turns things to bronze.ā
Jeanās eyes widened slightly. āā¦I wonder if that means, were we to put a diamond in it, if it would turn things into diamond instead?ā
Beside me, Arabella let out a soft whistle. āThink oā all things we could buy with that kind oā treasure,ā she murmured, more to herself than the others. āI could have my own placeāmy own tavern, even. Saints, I could buy myself an entire island!ā
āAnd Jack could get himself a better boat,ā Jean said. āWe could all have our own boats.ā
Now that was a tempting thoughtā¦though I was content to take orders from others, the thought of owning and captaining their own ship was a thought almost every sailor had. And if we could turn things into diamonds, we could get ourselves a rather nice ship. Maybe even a ship of the lineā¦
āMy people know the amulet as being a dangerous thing,ā Tumen suddenly reminded us. āIt is not a toy to be played with or used to purchase islands and ships.ā
I cleared my throat. āRight. Anyway, weāre trying to return it to your village, not use it for our own gain. We donāt need another Sword oā Cortes moment happening.ā
Arabella and Jean sheepishly nodded in agreement.
With the eveningās chaos now gone, it was time for the crew to get some rest. I volunteered for first watch, as I still felt rather awake. The lads disappeared below deck, but to my surprise, Arabella remained topside with me. I had a feeling I knew why, though.
āIām surprised youāre not turning in for the night, lass,ā I said, pulling out my compass to check our heading.
āIām not quite tired yet,ā she said, moving to check the lines attached to the mast. āSo, I thought Iād keep ye company for a little while.ā
My brow rose in amusement. āThatās a first. Usually, itās Jack whoās staying up tā keep me company. Or me staying up to keep him companyā¦ā
With the lines secured to her liking, she came to stand by the wheel with me. āWellā¦I may have a wee bit oā an ulterior motive or two,ā she admitted. āI wanted tā make sure you were doinā alright.ā
I blinked at that. āā¦You wanted tā make sure Iām doing alright?ā I repeated. āIām doing fine, Arabella.ā
āAre you sure?ā she asked, her brows furrowed. āI meanā¦after passing out like that earlierā¦ā She fiddled with the hem of her sleeve. āIt almost looked like ye had stopped breathinā completely anā I know thatās not good for a person.ā
My expression softened a bit and I gave her a reassuring smile. āWell, thanks tā you getting those stays off oā me, Iām doing a lot better than I would have been otherwise,ā I told her. āThank you, by the way. Iām not sure the lads would have thought tā do such a thing.ā
A small smile came to her lips and her worry seemed to ease up slightly. āOf course they wouldnāt haveātheyāve never worn the things before.ā
I quietly snorted. āFair point, lass.ā After lightly shaking my head, I looked up at the stars. āBut I promise you, Iām doing just fine after that. I have the dregs of a headache it brought on, but nothing worse than that.ā
āGood,ā she said with a small nod. āNowā¦why donāt ye tell me more about the ball?ā There it was: The actual reason I knew she had wanted to stay up. āWhatā¦what was it like? I know you talked about the dancinā already, but what about the gowns and the costumes? Were there any sort oā entertainers?ā
āNo entertainers that I saw aside from the orchestra, but the dresses were all rather lovely. Most oā them were much finer than the gown I had been wearing and were in all sorts oā different colors. Greens, reds, and yellows were the dominate colors oā the night, though. And the ladies also wore far more jewelry than me, too, and had their hair done up in intricate styles. Iām fairly certain some oā them were wigs, but most looked tā be their natural hair,ā I explained. āThe majority oā the costumes we saw were snake themed, which wasnāt too surprising, given Minuitās penchant for snakes. Minuit herself wore a rather striking black gown and had herself a mask that looked like a viper.ā
She nodded as she listened, her head tilted and a bit of a dreamy look in her eyes. āWhat sort oā food was there?ā
āMostly finger foods. Smoked and cured meats that had been sliced and cubed; slices of fancy cheese and bread; a few small cakes; and plenty oā diced fruit. It was rather good stuff, too. Even more so since I hadnāt eaten in a number of hoursā¦I actually wish I had managed tā eat a bit more, since I shared what I had with Fitzy.ā
āIt might be for the best ye didnāt eat much, though,ā she chuckled. āYe mightāve passed out sooner, otherwise.ā
āThat is very true,ā I agreed with my own small laugh. āAnd Fitzy wouldnāt have appreciated hauling my unconscious arse aroundāespecially when I was in that gown.ā
She brushed some of her auburn curls over her shoulder. āIt mustāve been hard, sneaking around in it. All that fabric rustlinā about anā not being able tā bend thanks tā the staysā¦ā
I shrugged. āIt wasnāt too bad,ā I admitted. āThe main thing, like you said, is the sheer amount oā fabric. I had forgotten just how much weight it can add tā a person, even with just the one petticoat. But, I will admit that it was probably for the best that I was dressed as a lass. Iām not sure Fitzy and I would have been able to convince the maid we were trying to get back to our room otherwise.ā
Her head tilted. āOh? Because the two oā ye acted like a drunk couple?ā I nodded, but my brow quickly rose when I watched a mischievous grin come to her lips. āYe had tā kiss him, didnāt you?ā
āKiss him?ā I snorted. āWhy in the world would you think I had tā kiss him?ā My voice and expression may have been amused, but inwardly, I felt my stomach lurch slightly.
The mischief in her smile turned almost wicked. āBecause your lip rouge was a wee bit smudgedā¦and some oā it was on his mouth.ā
I stared at her, unsure whether or not to believe what she was saying. Itās not like I had been paying much attention to his lips after ourā¦brief osculation to have noticed if my rouge had transferred onto themā¦
Her grin grew wider the longer I remained silent. āYe did kiss him, didnāt ye?ā she giggled. To her credit, she was keeping her voice quiet so no one else would hear. āWhat was it like? Is he a good kisser?ā
Knowing I couldnāt lie my way out of this now, I let out a defeated sigh and felt my cheeks grow just the slightest bit warm. āHeā¦was a fairly good kisser, that Iāll admit.ā
She pouted. āThatās it? Just a fairly good kisser?ā
I quietly snorted. āLass, Iāve kissed a grand total of two lads in my life, so I donāt really have much knowledge there tā judge by. Now, if I had been kissinā a lass, itād be a different story.ā Going over to the rail, I peered over the edge into the water; I was beginning to sense the water changing from fresh to salt. āBut, he knew what he was doing, Iāll give you that.ā My cheeks grew a bit warmer as I remembered how he had instantly pulled me closer to him, deepening the kissā¦and later, how he had kissed along my hand.
āSo, youāre sayinā he wasnāt a total amateur, then?ā she giggled, quickly pulling me out of my thoughts. āI have tā admit, thatās a wee bit surprising.ā
āIt was very surprising,ā I agreed, returning to the wheel. There was a bend in the river coming up and I would need to steer us through. āā¦By the way, this conversation is just between us two, aye?ā I asked. āYou wonāt be telling the others about this?ā
āOā course I wonāt,ā she assured me with a laugh. āI think we both know if the others found out, theyād never let ye anā Fitzy live it down. Jack, especially, would taunt the hell out oā ye both.ā
āOr get pouty that I had kissed him,ā I found myself thinking. Outloud, though, I said, āOh gods help me if Jack ever found outāheād start callinā me Mrs. Dalton the Third.ā
Scanned in the sketches I did of the Barnacleās crew while the power was out, tweaked the things were off, and now these are ready to be digitally inkedā¦.and then printed out, traditionally inked, and traditionally colored.
Did my best to keep them close to their canon ages, but they still came out a bit older looking. Oops š¬
Pretty happy with how scrunkly Constance came out, though~

I didnāt want to publish my next chapter until I got these done. These are the stats as of the end of Chapter 3. Iāll eventually make sheets of the stages of the Serpent Virus.
If you havenāt read it yet, the fic is here!
These sheets are a bit spoilery up to Chapt 3 so be aware. Some of the imagery is also a little creepy.
I forgot to color Jackās bandana but thatās ok bc it helps the eyes pop more. Also forgot to put a caps on Arabellaās name. Whoops!
While I reused drawings of some of the characters from my animatic, I HAD to redraw Jean. He turned out horrible in my video. I also originally drew Constance with no reference so since Iām not good at animals, I just photo bashed her for herās and Jeanās stat sheets.
Constance turned out so ugly and adorable šš
I did not want to actually draw these two lol. I had to steal them from Internet Archive since the illustrations from the second half of the series did not get digitally remastered. Still took a lot of time cutting them out tho.
The last one is Tim Hawk, who I had to put under the cut for the content. Iāll be placing a large ā ļøG0RE WARNINGā ļø here and continue with caution.
Sorry Tim! I said my next fan art would be a nice drawing of him. I think this is worseā¦
Since around this time will be 19 years since the YJS series first started (fuck Iām geriatric), I wanna share a little bit more about that YJS fanfic I wrote for a school project in fourth grade.
Storytime! So basically my school did a āYoung Authors Fairā every year where we wrote and illustrated our own books and theyād get published in hard bound covers and put on a showcase for the whole school to see. In my class, the theme of our books was freestyle so we got to write whatever we wanted. See I was too young to be a part of fandom culture (which was very lonely šŖ) and I was barely even online at all so I had no clue what fan fiction was. What ran through my head was that I wanted to write my own volume of the YJS series. So that resulted in me accidentally writing my very first ever fanfic, and drawing possibly my first fan art of YJS, and it got showcased in the Young Authors Fair for my family and all my classmates to read šš
āā
Iāve posted a small part of the cover art a few times, and that is still all Iām gonna show bc itās so bad. Jack here is probably the only somewhat good thing about it lmao.
āā
I think this one is safe to share. So I drew the whole crew here (including Tim whoās just peaking out from the bottom lol).
Random hyperfixation fact: I mixed Jean and Tumen up for a while, which I know I am NOT the only one who had that misunderstanding, so thatās why Constance is with Tumen and not Jean. Also when I first got into the books, my brain misread Fitzyās name as āFRitzwilliamā for the longest time and I spelled his name like that through this whole book š«
Also for context, the Young Authors Fair was either between the releases of Silver and City of Gold or right after City of Gold was released. Parts of my drawings suggest this was before City of Gold came out and some of my drawings suggest this was after it came out, so I may never know!
āā
Iām gonna say fuck it and share this one too. First thought would wtf is going on here. So thatās actually Jack and āFritzwilliamā at the helm of the Barnacle. Hope that helps!
āā
No, I am never sharing the rest of the art and nor am I ever sharing the fanfic. I havenāt even fully read the whole story since I wrote it š«
Iām embarrassed by the fact pple even read it in my school
Bonus art! This oneās more recent but still old as I drew this like 9 years ago. Iām 90% sure this art style was heavily influenced by the manga adaptation.
