Yooo even if the Man Who Laughs silent movie adaptation has to change a lot from the book even just because it would have been 7 hours long if it didn't cut anything, I LOVE that they made Barkilphedro a jester "who's laugh is never real". He becomes a dark mirror to Gwynplaine instead of... The most baffling villain in my Hugo reread. In the book, his destruction of Gwynplaine's found family feels completely accidental. HE feels completely accidental sometimes. But in the movie he's also involved in Gwynplaine's scarring and the capturing of his father (who dies in exile in the book). I like that.
