A time when you showed mercy

“Hee hee… I need to think hard to remember something like that.”

He makes a little cheerless laugh.

“Well, there certainly was Frisk… I did spare them in the end, I mean… and the first few times when I tried to kill someone I backed off at the last moment because, even though I already was not on my best behaviour back then, it still felt like stepping over a part of myself.”

“But the time I remember the best? The day I died. I remember… their face. They were right in front of me… a human, almost as tall as I was, with a black beard and in a grey shirt. I had nightmares about that shirt later on… They were screaming at me and - shooting. And their face… all scrunched up and, and burning and furious a-and unmoving, with their mouth open…”

Flowey takes a shivery breath. It is never easy to remember.

“A-and then they ran out of bullets so they, they hit me with the - with the handle of the - and they were, they were so close and I could hit them and I knew, w-we both knew, me and, and Chara, we b-both thought about hitting the human and - and killing them- and, and Chara almost did - but I did not, didn’t let them, I Spared, I tried to show M-mercy, but it did not change anything, and - and I still remember that face as the human hit me - and the screams…”

The nurse chattered happily about the weekend plans he had with his family as he bustled around the room. Either he was used to his patients not responding or he really was just talking to himself aloud. Having closed the curtains he went to check the magic IV, the medical ventilator, the heart monitor and lastly the soul monitor one last time, writing down the data on the clipboard that hung at the foot of the bed. As he put it back down he looked at the young woman lying in the bed with a sad smile.

“Well... You better let me tell you about how things actually turned out this, okay? Don’t you flat-line dare flat-line on me over the weekend, you hear me, young lady? Stay determined Angel.”

“Oh. Hello.” The little human tilts their head to a side like a curious bird. They are caught in the middle of something: namely, planting a large yellow flower on a top of a little hill in Waterfall.

They wonder quietly who is that monster, brave or foolish enough to wander so close to them. Ah, well. Either way, they don’t mind company.

“Are you lost? Or. Probably. You were passing to somewhere else. And did not expect me to be here. Either way. Welcome. Feel at home here. Cannot offer you much entertainment. Or refreshments. Sorry. I am a very lousy host. Ha ha.”

Anyone who knew anything about timeline hoppers knew exactly what those sounds meant. Yet another teleporting mishap has led to yet another visitor in a place they hadn’t actually meant to go.

“well, fuck. mental note: don’t try to go to another timeline while sleep deprived.”

How many times had he made that mental note? Too many. Definitely too many. He heaved himself up from the snow and wiped a bunch off of his face, groaning quietly. “all right, which kinda timeline am i in now?”

Stars today was one hell of a day. He already was usually tired by the end of his sentry shift, even though he rarely did anything, but today had been unusually eventful. He’d had to break up a small squabble between a bunny monster and a snowdrake, make his way to waterfall to “report” it to alphys without teleporting thanks to the offending monsters accompanying him the whole way, and even got quite literally dragged into the last half an hour of a training session between Sans and Alphys. So by the time his shift was done, he just wanted to go lay on the couch at home and relax.

He sighed and lit a final cigarette, taking his time to enjoy it before he returned home and couldn’t smoke indoors. Sans had let up on his avid disapproval of his habit after learning that it helped him manage his anxiety, but he still tried to respect his brother’s wishes that he didn’t do it in the house. Or at least that he didn’t do it outside of his room in the house. He sat at his station and smoked until the ember was at his teeth before snuffing it out in the snow and discarding the butt in a small can he kept under his station for just that purpose.

Ugh, now he just had to get home.

Deciding he had done plenty of walking and exercising today to satisfy his brother, he simply opted to take a shortcut to the couch. He leaned back and fell into a shortcut, closing his eyes to get ready to take a much deserved nap. However instead of landing on the worn but plush cushions on the familiar furniture, he landed in a heap on something that felt unmistakably like bone. He yelped and stood up, thinking he must have landed on his brother, and already was saying his apology as he turned to face him. “shit, uh sorry sans i-”

They weren’t quite sure where they were, but they knew it wasn’t home cause the skeleton brother’s house looked different. Maybe they’d jumped through one of those ‘breaks’ in their timeline, more and more of those seemed to be popping up-

Oh well, the small human decided to make the most of it and explored. Their latest discovery was an incredibly comfortable jacket, it had lots of fur on it and was very warm! So naturally, they were quick to claim it as their on and sit on the couch with it wrapped around them, looking very content.
