“I've found them, Fury.” Steve spoke into his radio, and observed from a distance. He was in some abandoned building, surrounded by the fallen bodies of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. They weren’t dead, thankfully, but they were knocked unconscious. Kneeling down in the centre of it all was you, holding your head in your hands.

You were rocking back and forth, tears streaming down your face. Your hands were trembling, and you wish you could rip them right out of your arms. From a young age, you always knew you were different in some way. You had strange powers: you were able to manipulate brain waves. You could get people to do what you wanted to do, and at the most extreme, you could knock people out and potentially kill them. You had never killed anyone, and you weren’t planning to. You hated your power in general; you didn’t know how to control it. 

“y/n.” Steve called out to you, and your head shot up. 

“You know my name?” your voice was small, and Steve approached you cautiously. You scrambled back, shaking your head. “No, stay away from me. Look at what I’ve done to these people. I never meant for anyone to get hurt!”

“I know you didn’t.” Steve reached out to you, still slowly coming closer. He was sent to you by Fury, who wanted to bring you in. If you could control you powers, you could become a valuable asset to the Avengers. “Calm down, I’m here to help.”

“How will you help me?” you asked, beginning to cry again. “I’m a monster.”

“You are not a monster.” Steve said firmly, finally reaching you and pulling you into a hug. You tried to pull away, but eventually broke down into his shoulder. “I’m going to bring you back to my base, and I know people who can help you control your powers.” 

“Wh-who are these people?” you asked, wiping away your tears. Steve gave you a small smile.

“Ever heard of the Avengers?” Steve asked, and your eyes widened. Steve was in his civilian clothes, but looking at him now, you wondered why you hadn’t seen it earlier.

“Are you... recruiting me for the Avengers?” you felt a strange mixture of confusion, fear and awe. Steve gave you a confident smile.
