"You know by now one of my favorite teachers is the incomparable Maya Angelou, and these words changed my thinking and life: “Forgive yourself for not knowing what you didn’t know before you learned it.” I take this teaching from Dr. Angelou to mean that we may make the same error in judgment, with an action we’re not proud of, because we don’t always learn something the first time around. There are times in life when the teaching is at a doctorate level so we must be patient, kind, and forgiving of ourselves if it takes more than one time to “know better and then actually do better.” You are worthy no matter what. You are enough. Be gentle with yourself and keep moving forward, get unstuck and let yourself “off the hook” for actions from your past.
