Hello, do you know anything about "barawari" (12 yard) sarees in Maharashtra? Balgandharva, the theatre actor who did female roles, would wear them and Kangana Ranaut wears them in a recent movie "Manikarnika". I think I've seen them in old Marathi movies?
To be perfectly honest the history of the 9 + yard sarees is a black box to me.Β It has its origins in the kaccha style but the many elaborate drapes and why they came about I have little information (not for want of trying!).Β Though I suspect some of the drapes are influenced by gowns esp where a part of the saree is left to trailΒ - I am guessing these are the barawaris you mention?
