“You knew about this?” Trinity scoffs and another wave of indignation crashes over her.

Baran opens her mouth to explain, but you interject, not wanting to put her in the middle of this apparent mess you’ve created.

“Of course she did, Trinity,” you snap before taking a deep breath. The last thing you want to do is escalate this into an argument. Over the past couple of months, you’ve come to learn that fighting with Trinity is a losing battle. “She’s my attending.”

And as a resident herself, Trinity, of course, understands the fellowship application process, the need for a letter of recommendation. But as your girlfriend, as Baran’s girlfriend, she can’t understand. She can’t understand how you didn’t even talk to her about even considering Stanford as one of your options, how Baran could know about this and even recommend you for it and not tell her.

For a moment, no one says anything, the calm fury in Trinity’s eyes saying enough as she looks between you and Baran.

“What is wrong with you?” she says finally, her fiery gaze directed at you. “You think because you got into Stanford that you’re too good for us? What? Because I’m still just a resident I didn’t deserve to know? I’m still your girlfriend–” she spits your name out with such disdain that it takes a valiant effort not to flinch.

You know how quick a fuse Trinity is, how little it takes for her to be set ablaze. You also know her bark is a lot worse than her bite, so you just raise your brows and give her a pointed look.

“Are you done?”

If it was possible, Trinity’s ears would be steaming, your words only enraging her even further. “Am I done?” she echoes, and she can feel her throat tightening as her anger burns down into resignation and hurt.

“You’re moving across the country and didn’t tell me.” Trinity’s voice cracks just slightly at the last word, and it sends a pang straight to your heart.

“Trin?” You say her name tenderly as you stand up from the couch and approach her, taking the crumpled packet out of her hand. You spare a quick glance down at the red and white before tossing it aside. “Did you see anything else in my bag while you were snooping?”

Your lips curve up into a teasing smile. Trinity frowns, this time her eyebrows knit with confusion instead of wrath.

Slipping past her, you quickly go into the bedroom, grab a different white envelope, before returning to the den and handing it to her.

Wordlessly, Trinity unfolds the letter from the already opened envelope. Her eyes scan the words and confusion embeds itself further onto her face. “What’s this?”

Rolling your eyes fondly, you look over at Baran who’s wearing a small smile with a fond amusement shining in her eyes.

“It’s my welcome letter from PTMC’s cardiology department,” you explain, taking a tentative step towards her. “I accepted their fellowship offer last week, but I wanted to tell you when it was official.”

“You’re staying?” Trinity bites her lip, careful not to express to much hope, but you can hear it in her voice and see it in her eyes.

Nodding, you place a light hand on her elbow. “There was never any other option. Besides—” you brush a stray tear from Trinity’s cheek, catching her glance with a reassuring smile— “Stanford’s just alright.”

You say it so mockingly that you both know it’s a light-hearted jab at your other girlfriend, and it causes Trinity to huff out a laugh. Out of the corner of your eye, you see Baran roll her eyes and shake her head, so you give her a quick wink before turning your attention back to Trinity.

“You’re staying,” she repeats, this time as a statement not a question, and you can hear the relief dripping off her words.
