Drabble requested by baranoyami, including her headcanon's about Rose's family in Ouroboros.
Rose hadn’t left Barnaby’s side since he had been wounded during an assignment a week ago. Every time Liam checked in to bring the Ouroboros agent a plate of food, some medicine, or a change of bandages, Rose and little Caleb were always there. They never crowded Liam while he worked, so he didn’t mind their presence. Even at his young age, Caleb was respectful enough of the doctor’s presence to remain silent whenever he was in the room.
Even in the middle of the night when Barnaby was due for another round of morphine, Rose and Caleb were still there. Liam wasn’t sure what time it was—his sleep schedule was so unusual that he had little regard for day or night. He knew that it was dark outside and had been for some time, and judging by the mostly quiet state of the residential section of headquarters Liam guessed it was only a couple of hours until dawn.
Barnaby was asleep, though his slumber was fitful, and Rose lay half-sitting up in her usual chair beside the hospital bed. Caleb was the only one awake, and the child stared at his father with concern glistening in his large eyes. When Liam entered, the boy looked up hopefully and whispered, “Daddy needs his medicine to feel better.”
Liam grinned and held up the pills for Caleb to see.
“That’s why I’m here, little one. Why aren’t you asleep like your mum and dad?”
The child shrugged and made room for Liam at the bedside. Judging by the thin layer of sweat coating Barnaby’s forehead, he was in some amount of pain. He managed to wake up just enough to take his pills before closing his eyes again and attempting to return to sleep. Caleb tugged on the sleeve of Liam’s white coat and asked quietly, “Is Daddy going to be okay?”
Liam nodded with his best attempt at a reassuring smile as he produced an extra blanket from a cabinet in the room and walked over to Caleb’s mother. After draping it on top of her and tucking it around her shoulders, he lifted the child and placed him on the chair beside Rose.
“If your father was awake, he would want you in bed. It’s late you know.”
Caring for this family was doing odd things to him, the doctor realized as he silently left the room for the night.
I had almost forgotten I even had a heart.
