boketto: to gaze vacantly into the distance without thinking or doing anything.
It’s a cliche, a terribly old one, but she thinks cities always look better when the sun is out of sight and the sky is vibrant with colours: pinks and oranges, yellows and blues. It’s a cliche, one she may not openly admit to, but she thinks there’s nothing quite like viewing rolling traffic and crowds of people from a floor so high up — Hyolyn can see them but they can’t see her and sometimes, that’s fine. Sometimes, she wants these moments to pass slower or perhaps, freeze time right here, right now as she stands on a barely populated floor while the buzz of life is neverending just below her. It’s a pause to everything: a pause to being Hyolyn, a pause to being Hyojung; a pause to greet cameras and exchange introductions, a pause to breathe and realize this time, she’ll do it alone — today, tomorrow and from then onwards. It shouldn’t come as a surprising thing but sometimes, the thought becomes just a little more pronounced in her head. For now, however, it’s white noise and for the first time in months, she tunes out entirely.
Even from his presence, unconsciously, without ill intentions but her mind doesn’t bother sending messages to her body — to move, to speak, to focus. She looks on, vacantly, towards a moving city and a fading sun, the coolness of the glass upon which her forehead rested on providing better comfort than a moving fan might. Still, she registered absently that when the time is right, she will turn to where others are and greet them brightly, boldly just like Kim Hyolyn usually does. If it’s just him, she’ll apologise for not having done so sooner and claim her head was in the clouds albeit it being.. well—nowhere, really.
Namsan Tower’s lights flicker on. From a slightly opened window somewhere to the side, she hears the enthusiastic yells of crowds. Below, a shower of flashing lights begin and that seems to be her cue — immediately, too suddenly, she snaps out of it as if she wasn’t even caught in a mindless trance.
Yongguk is there. Not too close but not too far either and for a moment, she thinks he, too, may be lost in thought or lost nowhere in particular. He seems it on a first glance and for a brief moment, she stares, a little surprised but uncertain as to why exactly. If that was the case, he doesn’t make it too obvious once he looks towards her as if feeling her gaze. Hyolyn corrects her expression and though she has a proper greeting ready, someone cuts it short by calling her over. A little perplexed, she moves off after giving a quick “hello” and a bow, all coupled with an apologetic smile.
If time allows it, if circumstances do, they may just meet again and most likely, her head won’t be in the clouds.
