Publication Studio Oakland presents a reading tomorrow night! In conjunction with Yerba Buena Center for the Arts' 'Bay Area Now 7', we're hosting Kevin Killian and Jason R Jimenez, both authors in Publication Studio's 'Fellow Travelers' series. This free reading will be at YBCA, 701 Mission St, in San Francisco.
Christy Funsch has been rehearsing at the Dance Mission Theater for eleven years. To her Dance Mission is an inextricable part of the Mission’s fabric, in contrast to the growing number of institutions, which have moved in yet remain disconnected from the neighborhood.
One story up from Mission Street, Dance Mission is a vibrant community space, with a black box theater and plenty of local artwork on the walls. Â It is home to so many, always active with the creative energies of neighborhood youth (check out GRRRL Brigade) as well as industry professionals. Love lingers in these halls. Kompiang Davies (pictured bottom left) is the Artistic Director of Gadung Kasturi Balinese Dance and Music, Inc. Based in Richmond, every Sunday her living room comes alive with both artists & non-artists, who are committed to Balinese culture. “To feed their souls,” as Kompiang describes. When I went to visit her, Kompiang practically had me in tears  as she described growing up in a household that forbade her to dance. Today, Kompiang’s well-being is closely intertwined with a life that celebrates Balinese dance and music with others.-- from Performing Arts intern Trouve Ivo

Spoken word & hip hop theater artist Paul Flores talks about the history of San Francisco's artist communities, their displacement by tech industry wealth, and finding common ground in community investment. Interview by dance student & YBCA Performing Arts intern Jessica Thiel at Inner Mission (formerly CELLspace).
