Happy Pangolin Day!
Our neighbors in Malaysia call them penggulung - the source of the English common name! Penggulung is also related to gulong in Filipino, which means wheel, tire, or the act of rolling.
It is also known as Balintong, a Bisaya term for "to overturn" or turnover.
The Palawan Pangolin or Balintong (𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴) is one of 8 species of Pangolin in the world. It curls into a ball protected by its scaly “armor” as a defense, and when hungry it unfurls a very long tongue to eat ants and termites!
