An Apology
To the customer who walked out this morning under served. I try very hard to get to everyone at some point when they visit the store. Today I failed you. I’m Sorry.
I’m attempting to train my 13-year-old son to help out at the bookstore, and work on task management and organizational skills at the same time (he is a “spectrum” child). Between finishing up with an existing customer and starting my son on his next task I forgot to check in and see if you needed any assistance.
Balancing family and an independent business is difficult. Daily I fail one or the other at some point. I am the “chief cook and bottle washer” [sic] for my business. I have a wonderful mom who helps out with the bookkeeping and an amazing volunteer that allows me to take a half-day off every Wednesday. Largely, every aspect of operating the business every day is me: Opening, running the register, ordering for the store, receiving and shelving orders, customer service, email, telephone, events, and more. The most difficult task is when I have my sons in the store with me, “helping”, and trying to navigate between being a mom and a professional business owner. I’ve been trying to get it right for eight years now, maybe in another eight years I will have a better idea how it works.
