Couple arrested for having 'bakakuk' and 25 live bullets

KOTA KINABALU, April 2
A married couple were picked up by the Lahad Datu police after they were found to be in possession of a home-made gun, locally known as bakakuk.
Police also seized 25 live bullets from the couple, both 24, during a raid at an unnumbered house in Kampung Tampinau, Danum, Lahad Datu, some 450kmfrom here recently.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mat said a team from the Crime Investigation Department, led by Inspector Abdul Muthalib Harun, was sent to the location following a public tip-off and the arrest was made at 8pm.
“The bakakuk and the live bullets were hidden under a mattress.”
He said the couple would be investigated under Section 8 of the Firearms Act (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, which carries a maximum jail sentence of 14 years and caning of not less than 6 strokes, upon conviction.
Bakakuk is a type of homemade gun, found largely in Sabah, generally used by local natives for hunting wild animals as well as to protect traditional farms. It uses real bullets or pellets.
It is made of improvised materials like nails, steel pipes, wooden pieces, bits of string and even tap heads.
Some villagers are experts in making these weapons and some are claimed to be almost as good as factory-manufactured shotguns.
It is, however, illegal as there have been many fatal cases involving bakakuk.
