Something DifferentÂ
Mick Jagger by David Bailey.
I think Bailey probably used 2 studio lights with soft boxes at either side of the camera going by the shadows in the image. I think Bailey might have used a 35mm lens or something similar in this image because to me the view looks pretty standard but slightly wide angle. I think Bailey created his depth of field with his camera set about F8 as I would say the image has a particularly shallow depth of field. I think this may have been printed on a lustre paper or something similar as I don’t think that it would suit a glossy finish. I think It may also have been printed about 3x6ft or something similar as it was a very large print.Â
This isn’t my favourite image of the gallery but I do find it interesting. I like that Mick Jagger look very androgynous in this image and at first I thought it was a woman. I like the natural expression on his face and the natural movement in the scarf he has over his face. I’m not a fan of the colours in this image and I think the image would be better suited in black and white as I find the colours distracting and a little bright. I like that there’s a flow to this image as your eyes are drawn to Jagger’s face and then they naturally follow the scarf up the image. The image has Bailey’s signature, an unusual crop as Jaggers shoulder is cut out a little on the left side of the image. I think the camera was level with Jaggers face when it came to taking this shot. I think this was a very of the moment image and Bailey chose the format that he thought would suit this image, which I think it suits and its very much Bailey’s style.Â
I don’t think that this image was influenced, like I said I think it was a very of the moment image. I don’t think that it was commissioned for this reason either. I also don’t think Mick Jagger is particularly recognisable in this image so I doubt it would have been a promotional picture. I think this image is quite of its time as androgyny was more of a thing at the time of this picture. I think this image would have surprised a few people also as Mick Jagger isn’t a very feminine man but he appears very soft in this image.
