While most of the village is asleep, this badger is wide awake — digging, snuffling, working the ground as the rain comes down.

This is classic nocturnal behaviour. Nose low, paws busy, following scent rather than sight. Worms, larvae, beetles — the rain softens the soil and brings the larder to the surface. Badgers know this. They always have.

There’s something quietly grounding about watching it happen in real time. No drama. No rush. Just instinct, patience, and purpose at nearly one in the morning.

Moments like this remind you how active the land really is after dark — especially around Northam / Appledore, where wildlife corridors are still very much alive.

Badger Watch: Nightlife Around Appledore 🦡🌙

We’ve been lucky enough to catch some of our elusive local residents on trail camera – badgers, busy in the hedgerows and lanes around Appledore.

These shy creatures emerge after dusk, following well-worn paths between the fields and woodland edges. Watching them move with such purpose and grace is a quiet reminder of the rich wildlife that still thrives just beyond our doorsteps.
