The tension in the air had been palpable for days. Things were getting grimmer by the minute and it was only a matter of time before things came to a head. Sleep had been hard to come by for Fay, not a surprise at all, but that night she had managed to pass out in a fitful sleep for the first time in awhile. Of all nights, it had to be that one.Â
She was out like a light when she felt a shove at her shoulder, stirring her awake with a jolt. âMmph,â she grumbled, looking around with confusion until her eyes landed on Sophieâs. They were filled with terror and Fay sobered immediately, her mind awakening quickly.Â
âItâs happening. Theyâre here,â was all Sophie needed to say to get Fay to fly out of her bed, wand at the ready.
Her movements were sluggish for only a few moments before the adrenaline started to kick in and she was dressed within seconds. The sounds of screams were drifting up towards them now, the cries of war unmistakable. This was it. By the end of the night, there would finally be an end, though not really any winners. With the death that was to come, it just felt like a loss for everyone involved.Â
Reaching to grab Sophieâs hand, Fay hesitated, wanting to direct the girl somewhere safe, somewhere that the battle wouldnât get a hold of her. Unfortunately, she knew that wouldnât happen. Sophie wouldnât leave any sooner than she would. âStay close,â she mumbled, biting at her lip. There was so much else she wanted to say, but there just wasnât the time for it. It would have to wait.Â
Bursting from the room with the rest of the DA, the scene in front of them only made Fayâs heart sink deeper. The chaos was already ensuing, with battles starting to rear up at every corner of the castle. Her hand gripped tighter with Sophieâs, head spinning wildly until she spotted McGongall, who was directing the troops.Â
Troops. A war. A genuine battle. Fay had always been fighting against something, but never like this. Was she strong enough? Brave enough? She had to be. There was too much to lose to let the Death Eaters win.
Everything from there felt like a blur that Fay barely remembered. They fell into place at one of the entrances, bracing for what was coming as the Death Eaters began their march inside. People started to fall all around them, one by one getting torn asunder by the waves of enemies that were coming into the castle. It was only a matter of time before they had to fall back, Fay practically carrying Sophie away from it to get a better position. It was too dangerous up front.Â
They rounded a corner, taking just a moment to catch their breath before the battle was upon them again. Fay lifted her wand, locked in a duel with one of the Death Eaters, her back pressed against Sophieâs. Using her wand, she ripped the wall out next to the masked stranger, the rubble slamming into them and taking them out just as she heard a shout of pain behind her as another of them fell.Â
The hallway went quiet, signalling that it was time to move on. Taking off at a slow run, they came around another bend where more action could be heard. A familiar voice screamed out just as they arrived. One of their housemates, a sixth year named Taylor, fell before them, a pool of blood gathering around her.Â
âShe - fuck, she needs help,â Fay half shouted as she jumped in front of everything, locking herself in another duel with the masked figure that had downed Taylor. With the man distracted, it gave Sophie a chance to help their housemate up to get her to safety. Not even Taylorâs friendship with the great Severus Snape could have saved her from the battle.Â
Sending up a shielding spell, Fay started to back up, following closely with Sophie as they escorted Taylor away from the battle to a safer area of the castle. There was an almost calm for a moment, no immediate threats attacking them. Until they turned the corner again. And there stood another Death Eater, wand already slashing through the air.Â
Fay charged forward, pushing Sophie and Taylor back as she felt a wave of heat through her middle. She staggered half a step before regaining her balance to send a killing curse forward. It wasnât something Fay had ever thought she could do, but the pain, mixed with the realization that if she didnât do something, Sophie was next, made it erupt from her wand. The green light flashed forward and the Death Eater was dead seconds later.Â
âFay! Fay are y -âÂ
Holding a hand up, Fay waved off Sophieâs question. âIt missed wide, Iâm fine. Keep running, both of you get somewhere safe. Iâm right with you.âÂ
She had one hand at her middle, where the wave of heat had coursed through her, and her hand came away red. Her entire stomach was split right through the middle, a deep wound that had already left her robes soaked. But, she had no choice but to keep moving along. Someone had to watch Sophieâs back until they got to safety.Â
Luckily, it wasnât far off. Things had been going for what felt like hours and finally, there was a reprieve. Voldemortâs voice was carried through the air, giving them one hour to surrender. They made it outside of the Great Hall and Fay waved Sophie and Taylor inside. âYou go in, I think I dropped my wand back there, be right in.âÂ
But, she wouldnât be.Â
Staggering to the wall, Fay slumped against it, letting herself sink down to the ground outside in the entrance hall. Her hands were now coated in blood as she peeled her robes away from her midsection, eyes widening when she saw the actual damage that had been done. She could see inside herself, something that she immediately realized was bad, but couldnât bring herself to do anything about.Â
Her energy was sapped from having carried on after the initial injury and all the running had probably only made the cursed wound worse. But, Sophie was safe. Sophie was alive. And, really, wasnât that all that mattered. As her eyes fluttered to a close, Fay just wished she could have said something, told Sophie how she felt. Told her that she loved her so much that she would die for her. But, maybe this was one of those times where actions spoke louder than words.
