I think many young DJs go through a phase where they learn to mix and they consider themselves the best thing since sliced bread. It is very easy to get caught up in the idea that mixing is easily learned and mastered – it is not. This is a game of chess, not checkers. Older DJs will state the obvious problem here; these young guys simply have not paid their dues. They have learned how to do things the easy mechanical way – yet they have never learned the actual theory behind what it is that they are doing. DVS is a great achievement in the DJing world – but those who start out digital only will fail to learn things that other DJs did. When records were the only format available, the DJ had to make a conscious decision to buy or not buy a record, and it wasn’t cheap. Once they had the music, they had to intimately learn the ins and outs of how the vinyl felt, as well as when to mix and where to mix. DVS sort of destroyed this discovery process which actually cripples young DJs when they want to be creative.
