1895-1948

BABE RUTH WAS AN AMERICAN BASEBALL PLAYER He was born George Herman Ruth. He had a natural talent for baseball and made the sport popular during the 1920s. He was raised in poverty in Baltimore and later went to a boys home. He started playing for the Baltimore team whilst still in his teenage years. He played for the Boston Red Sox in 1914 and was known for his record results as a pitcher. His popularity rose for his batting ability. He then joined the New York Yankees in 1919, and they won five times. In his career he gained 714 home runs and retired in 1936.

He had a drinking problem, was known for his bad temper and getting involved in fights, he had many affairs and overate - he enjoyed hot dogs and fizzy drinks.

Ruth was popular in Japan, which helped Japan establisht he Japanese baseball league.

He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1946 and died in 1948, aged 53.
