           It’s become a tradition at this point: every time Luke sleeps over he and Noah share a giant bowl of ice cream for breakfast. The request to add waffles is new, but Noah is fairly certain he has a box of Eggo waffles somewhere in the freezer. It takes a moment to find the waffles – chocolate chip and freezer burned – but Noah pulls them out and displays the box to his grandson triumphantly. 

           “Stick a few of these in the toaster, will you?” Noah asks, handing the box to Luke. The little boy nods, eager to help. Noah keeps an eye on the child as Luke wrestles the frozen waffles apart and puts two of them in the toaster. T-minus five minutes to breakfast. Noah pulls out a bowl, scooping out a generous amount of ice cream and then a little more. 

           The toaster dings and Noah grabs a plate, pulling the waffles from the toaster and cursing under his breath at the unexpected heat. Whoops. Hopefully Luke hadn’t heard. And if he had, hopefully the child won’t feel the need to repeat the words. 

           “Just remember, if your daddies ask, we had fruit and yogurt.” Noah knows that Luke won’t lie to his fathers, but the reminder is as much a part of their routine as the ice cream itself.

YEAH ,   SAM     —–   you  don’t  exactly  do  much  to  hide  it.

‘ ya know... that’s a lot of pieces for just one crib. are you sure that all came in one box? ’  

          “     FIRST    ,      i  hit  the  bar  for  a  couple  of  shots.    “ 

           HOW  LONG  HAD  IT  BEEN   ??      two  -  three  years   ??    he  doesn’t  blame  him  the  way  he  once  did ,  hatred  that  had  once  hardened  his  heart  gradually  loosened  it’s  grip.   sam  had  no  choice  back  then ,  he  knows  that  now.   he  didn’t  leave  him  behind  ;  he  just  had  to  do  what  he  had  to  do   

                                                                ——–    what  his  father  needed  him  to  do.  

          if  he  knew  then  what  he  knows  now  ;  maybe  he  would  have  told  him  he’d  still  be  there  waiting ,     as  opposed  to  telling  him  to  get  the  fuck  out.   but  the  past  is  in  the  past  and  sam  was  here  now ,  asking  for  his  help.   

                he’s  not  the  happy  -  go  -  lucky  ,  nerd  boy  he  once  knew  ;  he  looks  broken. 

          he  wont  ask ,  none  of  what  sam  has  been  through  is  his  business  unless  sam  wants  him  to  know ,  instead ,  he’ll  pull  him  into  a  hug ,  hold  him  the  way  he  used  to.   chin  resting  upon  a  shoulder ,  fingers  tangled  deep  into  those  ridiculously  thick  strands.
