The history of the house of Venus was like so many of them, written in blood. Ayla, in particular, had suffered a great deal. Theo wasn’t especially sentimental, or gentle in any regard, but that the immortal had been through so many ordeals was significant. “We’re going to catch him.” Theo assured, this Leech would be put to rest one way or another. “The marshals are hunting him even now, he exposed himself to everyone at the wedding. He can’t hide forever.” The leech was strong, stronger than any of them now given how much he’d fed, but that was all the more reason to cut it down quickly. 

The truth was that Giovanni loved Rome, Italy in general but after Florence it had to be his favourite place in the world. Which was saying something because by this point Giovanni had taken the time to go to most places. Rome would always have his heart because this was where his family was, his sister was a bit stuffy and his mom had seen better days but that was where he came in. Lighten the mood a bit, after everything Ayla had been through it sounded like she needed it. 

Blood bags tasted like shit, a leech had been on the loose but was apparently reformed now, Ayla had been attacked, the fucking Queen’s consort was dead. A senator had been murder, the fairy queen was locked up, but then she broke out, and a bunch of lunatics with a book of death magic were running around. Oh, and hunters were working with the senate now. Giovanni had been brought up to speed but his eyes were still closed. “Alright mum, where are we going first? And don’t say Just A Bite I’m not letting you turn this into a take your kid to work thing.” The family bit was something he’d started a couple centuries ago, at first it was just to annoy Isabella but then it stuck. They felt like his family, the rest of the Medici dynasty had died out in the eighteenth century, Isabella and Ayla were all he had left. 

“I think I might owe you an apology.” It had been almost a year since the two had run into one another outside of the funeral games sponsored by the witches of Rome. Almost a year since Emma had rebuked the other’s help and treated her so coldly. The halfblooded didn’t think she’d changed, but there was a part of her that regretted her cruel rejection of the other’s aid. Emma was stubborn, but the two had fought side by side in the bowels of the Pluto estate the night of the massacre. That had to have meant something. “I suppose surviving a zombie apocalypse with someone changes a person’s perspective.”

“Few records remain from the last time the Asphodel surfaced in the city,” Theo offered, most of what they had were digitized now, stored on a network that the Juno vampire flipped through with ease. The modern age brought with it all sorts of conveniences, but it didn’t bring back what had been lost to them. “apart from Romulus, I don’t think I know anyone who was here at the time. Just that a lot of us died.” The demise of the Asphodel was at the forefront of his thoughts, the wedding was nearly upon them and the magisterium itself would be stepping in. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there that night,” he said with a pause, breaking his concentration for a moment to look over at the Venus vampire. “I should have been.”
