Pete Shelley: “Homosapien” (1981)
For times when we might be stuck on ideas for Omega WUSB deluxe broadcasts, we go back and retrieve the classics. ‘Marquee’ volumes are ones where we play popular and forever relevant artists such as Siouxsie Sioux, David Bowie, Run DMC, The Clash, The Cure, Suicide, plus many more; and we do it just to see who’s simply paying attention. It was Pete Shelley’s birthday yesterday. Given how much we played The Buzzcocks on our show, why have we yet featured his solo stuff? Written in 1974 and intended as a Buzzocks demo, Shelley opted it for his solo debut single and became the kickoff for his debut of the same name. Nowhere near his punk output, it’s more synth-pop driven and heavily danceable. Think The Cars or Alan Vega’s Saturn Drive (1983).
After his solo pursuits in the Eighties, Shelley went on to become a morbid florist.
