Sylvanus, my poor well sweet uhhhh... he's one of my blorbos. Short and simple. He's a bit of an all-around mess. Sure, he usually can hide most of the major issues but not always.
He's a pretty cold and distant person, often playing it off as not having any to begin with, though that's just a mask for being surprisingly emotional and reactive. There are rare moments of his mask slipping but that's usually in one-on-one moments with people he trusts. He's essentially the biggest stalwart for The Family. His loyalty might be hard to get but by gods does it take a lot for his trust to be broken once you get it.
I'm gonna write a lot so ummm, more under the cut
He originally found out about The Family through being coworkers with Sean. Even after changing jobs, he still kept in contact and occasionally hung out with him. Were they great friends? No, but they were just marginally close enough for Sean to bring him to The Family. Sylvanus was actually pretransition when he joined. It wasn't until a good while of being a cult member did he have his egg crack moment and transition.
He mostly kept to himself and Sean during his first bit within the cult, though he slowly warmed up to others. Surprisingly, he warmed up to Lexx quite a bit. Him and his need of approval from higher ups...
He got a lot of tasks involving stalking. Weirdly enough, he's quite good at it. He kept tabs on Lee a lot, both minor things like his typical schedules and more intense things like actually breaking in and filming Lee while he was asleep. Most of the information ended up getting used for the major break ins, or just to keep track of Lee.
A lot of Sylvanus' feelings on The Family shifted once Michael's death happened. Especially since he got caught by one of the bullets when Sean opened fire on other cultists fleeing. He was fairly blind to a lot of Sean's changes. By the time he'd met Sean, a lot of the groundwork had already been laid. It wasn't until that entire fiasco did he really realize just how awful Sean could be.
He had maybe a week and a half between getting shot and being put back to work. Specifically, since now Lee was under the Family's watch, he was now tasked with being the primary person to watch over Lexx, which left him... conflicted. On one hand, this was The Speaker's way. No way could Sean be misled, if Michael had to die, the he had to, and if Lexx was going to try and attack The Speaker's chosen, then she also needed to be dealt with. But at the same time... This was Lexx, he was actually friendly with her before all of it. Hell, he'd consider her somewhat of a friend, even Michael was on some level. Maybe Sean had gone mad after all, especially after listening to all of Lexx's mumblings and rants about how "Sean was leading The Family away from their goal for his own benefit." She might actually be right about that.
And with Sean kidnapped and being watched by Mo and Lee, Sylvanus was sure that Lexx was going to punish him for it. He'd practically accepted it. Though, when she actually offered to give him a more serious role, he was taken completely by surprise. Because... why??? According to Lexx it was because "He showed just how loyal to The Family he was", though he does question that explanation a shit ton and doesn't quite believe her when she says that's the explanation. He is admittedly happily under Lexx's lead though, there does seem to be a genuine amount of care from her. And when she offered him the chance to prove his loyalty to The Speaker and it's new chosen, how could he refuse? All he had to do was wrangle Mo and hold him while Lexx monologued to him and Sean.
He did feel quite awful after it all, though. That was the man who brought him into the cult, but now he was gone.. And sure, Lexx was nice, but it still felt a modicum of wrong. But now, they had more important things to focus on, like actually finding the other carriers. Especially since now Lee knew where they were, and he was also actively looking for them too.
And technically there is a lot more during the 7 years of Lee's hermitness, but Eh, this is most of the more basic(?) stuff of Sylvanus. More a "brief" overview before any nitty gritty details.
