I’ve never played a role playing game nor do I know anything about them but i am always open to new activities for the kids, especially with the efforts our library is going to, to keep the kids involved and engaged in a variety of ways. After we played Clue at the library, one of our friends shared her love of Dungeons and Dragons with our librarian and she invited us to register for the upcoming roleplaying game. Our friend was so excited and, although, my kiddo had no idea about such things, she agreed to give it a shot. And what a success it was!! I had one of my older morning kiddos, Ryan, try it out as he is quite the gamer and the older girls were at Futsal camp. Ryan LOVED it and it was so great to hear him engage with the other players while using teamwork to find a resolution to their game. In the afternoon, the very inexperienced girls came home and gave it a shot. Truly, they were clueless and bored in the beginning but by the time they wrapped on the game they couldn’t stop expressing how much they enjoyed playing. I’m not a huge advocate of screens but I can totally support chatting with friends and using teamwork to get through a game together. I thought it was a great use of time as an occasional activity! While our children’s library remains “closed” to visitors inside, our librarian, Miss Kasey, has found wonderful ways to engage the kids during this season of COVID. Recently, she allowed me to create some character art for her customized version of Clue where mystical creatures in an enchanted land are held responsible for capturing a unicorn that must be saved! The kids were the game pieces, the library lawn, the board. Praise Jesus for opening up the clouds on this day that was meant to pour on us. We all looked forward to getting out of the house and successfully, we did!
