Avocados have grown in popularity in recent years due to their multitude of health benefits and flexibility in recipe use. While it’s easy enough to head to the store and buy avocados mostly year-round, there’s nothing better than fresh fruit straight from your own garden. With the right care and maintenance, it’s easy to grow your own avocado trees right in your backyard. It can take a while before saplings fully grow and flower, but patience always pays off when you make that first harvest.
Planting Avocado Trees
Avocado trees are native to more tropical climates, so they’ll naturally grow better the further south you plant them. Timing is also important. Avocado trees need time to grow and adapt to their new environments before the cold settles in, so it’s always best to plant them in the spring.
Your trees will need enough space to grow to their full potential. Make sure you allow at least ten feet between your new tree and any building or structure. The roots can also grow deep and long, so allowing thirty feet between other fruit trees is recommended for healthy growth.
It’s important to note that you can grow avocado trees from avocado pits, but the fruits grown won’t be the same. Buying a sapling or already matured avocado tree will help ensure your garden is successful and your avocados are in good health.
Caring for Your Avocado Trees
Avocado trees can take a lot of work to keep healthy, but the fruits they bear are always worth the extra effort. Taking the time to keep your tree maintained can make all the difference between a beneficial garden and a failed one.
As a tropical plant, avocado trees do best when exposed to lots of sunshine. If possible, try to make sure your tree is in a part of your garden that gets a minimum of eight hours of sunlight per day. While partially shaded areas won’t kill your trees, you’ll get more produce at a higher quality with better lighting.
The roots of avocado trees are particularly sensitive. It’s important that you have the right soil conditions to keep your garden healthy. Soil should be aerated, with a PH balance between five and seven. The root system also tends to be shallow, so adding some mulch around the area can help protect these roots from gardening activities and wild animals.
Avocado trees don’t need as much water as other plants, but when they are ready for watering, you’ll want to make sure you water them deeply. Getting the water into the lower layers of the soil helps encourage strong root growth, which helps produce better fruit. A mature avocado tree will need about two inches of deep water a week, increased in hot or dry environments.
Harvesting Avocado Trees
After all your hard work has paid off, you’ll see your avocado trees starting to flower. However, the fruits of avocado trees don’t ripen on the branches. Instead, you’ll need to pick them once they’re the right size and let them rest inside until they are ripe. With enough time and patience, you can have fresh avocados delivered from your garden right to your kitchen.

I am not entirely sure but I think the avocado tree might have died. It could just be losing leaves before getting its permanent ones, but since I don’t know what verity of avocado tree it is I cant really be to sure. The avocado tree has some new leaves it. It has been growing a lot more lately I think we have the spring sun to thank for that.
