Translation of the Aviot x Milgram Collab Ad
ジャッカロープ: よお、エス!面白い話があるんだ。さっさと起きろ。
Jackalope: Yo Es! I've got something interesting to tell you. Get up already!
エス: なんだ、ジャッカロープ。まだ次の審判までは、時間があるはずだろ?
Es: What is it, Jackalope. There is still time until the next judgment, isn't there?
ジャッカロープ: おっと、悪い悪い。このミルグラムの監視ための生かしたアイテムを一つ、紹介し忘れてたな。
Jackalope: Oops, my bad, my bad. I forgot to introduce one item that's useful for monitoring Milgram.
エス:その小さな箱見たいな物のことか。
Es: That small box-looking thing?
ジャッカロープ: ああ、その通り。何事もコンパクトな方がスマートでいいだろう。この、俺様のようにな。
Jackalope: Ahh, that's right. Compact things are always smarter. Just like my esteemed self.
エス:よく話が見えないよ。なんで、その箱がどうした?
Es: I don't see what you mean. What, what is it with that box?
ジャッカロープ: 【笑う】 ミルグラムは囚人たちの新風景、歌と映像として抽出できるだろ。こいつはその歌を高音質で聞くためのアイテム。ありて言うとワイヤレスイアホンってね。つけてみるか?
Jackalope: *Laughing* Milgram lets you extract the prisoners' mental images as songs and videos, right? This is an item for listening to those songs in high quality. Simply put, it’s wireless earphones. Wanna try it on?
エス:ふーん。この形状、装着感は快適なの?別にイヤホンなんてどんなものでも構わないだろう。
Es: Hm. This shape… It's comfortable to wear? I don't particularly care about this earphone or anything, no matter what kind they are.
Commentary: The "なんて" in this context probably means the dismissive nuance rather than shock or contempt hence why I chose to translate it as "earphone or anything".
ジャッカロープ:はぁあ!!分かってねぇな、エス!こいつ、ただのイヤホンじゃねぇ。「電源オン」 だの 「ピアリング」 だのって操作を、俺たち管理人と十人の囚人、十二人のボイスでアシストする。十二人のモードはスマホのアプリでいつも切り替え可能。ご機嫌だろう?
Jackalope: Haaah!! You just don’t get it, Es! This thing isn’t just some regular earphone. Operations like “Power On” and “Pairing” use the voices of us Wardens and the ten prisoners, twelve voices assisting. You can switch between all twelve modes anytime with the smartphone app. Impressive, huh?
Commentary: "ご機嫌" means something like humor or good mood/spirits. I'm guessing Jackalope might be saying that this earphone would make Es/audience in a good mood? But that felt kind of clunky so I translated it as "Impressive, huh?"
エス:その声が真実である保証はあるのか?人間は嘘をつく生き物。僕たちを出し抜くための偽物の可能性は?
Es: Is there any evidence that those voices are telling the truth? Humans are creatures that lie. It could be a trap to outwit us, a decoy.
ジャッカロープ:ところがこのボイスは、原作山中拓也による書き下ろし。出処は確かだぜ。お前のお気に入りの囚人を身近で味わってもらえるというわけだ。
Jackalope: But this voice? It's an original work written by Takuya Yamanaka, the original creator himself. The source is solid. It means you can savour your favorite prisoner closely and personally.
Commentary: I've replayed this part at least 20 times to hear what he's saying but even then, I'm not too sure. "気に入り" means favorite, yes, but it can also mean pet as in teacher's pet, hahaha. There are other ways to say favorite and I just thought it was funny Jackalope chose this wording. Could be a direct reference to the original Milgram experiment? Do what you will with this info. Another bit of extra information is "味わってもらえる" literally means "to let you taste" but it'd mean "experience" in this context. Though knowing Jackalope's character and his tone, the word choice feels intentionally objectifying so I translated it by "savor your favorite prisoner closely and personally" to convey a similar voyeuristic nuance.
エス:おい!近い!ちょっと何を言っているかはよく分からないが、とにかく唯一正しい物と言うのだな。
Es: Oi! You're too close! ...I don't really get what you're saying but… you’re claiming it’s the only correct one, right?
Commentary: During and after Jackalope’s line, the camera zooms in on his face, presumably from Es’s perspective. While Es only says "Oi! Close!", the distressed tone and camera shake suggest it’s more of a protest, which is why I translated it as “you're too close” in the English. For anyone reading into Es’s aversion to physical closeness, this sort of proves their discomfort isn’t limited to prisoners. Just a small addition to the pile of theories. Once again, Es doesn't question what Jackalope says when clearly its a moment where they probably should. He literally just broke the fourth wall!
ジャッカロープ : ちょ、ちょ、ちょ。【笑う】そういうこと。
Jackalope: Woah, woah woah. *Laughing* Exactly.
エス:まあ、監事の仕事には有用そうだ。それに、充分高音質なんだな。
Es: Well, it does seem useful for my job as Warden. And… the sound quality is more than adequate.
ジャッカロープ : なあ、サウンドチューニングってやつをミルグラムのサウンドプロデューサーデコ27に依頼しているからな。パッケージデザインも凝ったぜ。見てみろよ。開けても閉めてもええになるぜ!
Jackalope: Hey, we asked Milgram's sound producer Deco*27 to do the sound tuning for us. The packaging design is also super detailed too. Look at it. It looks great whether it's opened or closed!
Commentary: Jackalope talks ridiculously fast here, and I may have misheard the phrase “ええになるぜ,” but I’m assuming it’s a slurred version of “良いになる” meaning “looks good” or “turns out great.” At the end, he literally says “it looks good opened or closed,” but I translated it as “it looks great whether it’s open or closed” to match his show-offy energy.
エス:さっきからよく分からないことを言っているが、ミルグラムの選択だ。信頼するとしよう。確かにパッケージは豪華だが。お前、その手で開けられるのか?
Es: You’ve been saying a lot of things I don’t quite understand, but... If it's Milgram's decision, I'll trust it. The packaging is extravagant, though. Can you even open it with those hands?
Commentary: More proof that Es has no idea what's actually happening but decides not to question it. I wasn't sure how to translate the "確かに" here so I just italicized for emphasis.
ジャッカロープ : 【笑う】ぐっと気合いを入れたら開ける。
Jackalope: *Laughing* Just get fired up and it'll open.
Commentary: Literally it means "if you put in a solid burst of spirit, it'll open" but that's sort of abstract? Plus, Jackalope typically sounds more commanding than that.
エス:開けられるのか?しかし、これだけ多くの要素があれば囚人たちの事をもっと理解できるかもしれないな。
Es: You can open it? Still, with this many features, we might be able to understand the prisoners a bit better.
ジャッカロープ : そうだ。これを使って囚人どもを丸裸にしてやるな。ミルグラム完全ワイヤレスイヤホン。今すぐ予約しね!
Jackalope: That's right. Use this to strip those damn prisoners bare. Milgram true wireless earphones, pre-order now!
Commentary: Okayyyy. I've got my Jackalope hater hat on, let me break this down for you. He says "囚人ども" which is a derogatory way to say prisoners (plural) so I translated it as "damn prisoners". The most literal translation for what he says is "use this to strip the prisoners naked". It's double meaning like in English, can be taken metaphorically as in exposing the prisoner's secrets and feelings. But at the same time, Jackalope kind of a pervert (with the preference of Mahiru and Muu back in T1, he even sits on Muu's lap like wtf) so I would not put it past him to be purposely using this innuendo. Either interpretation, is definitely invasive.
エス:さあ、お前の罪を歌え。
Es: Now, sing your sins.
Commentary: I will never get over this catchphrase.
Why. Are. They. Speaking. So. Dang. Fast!!! Jackalope made my life harder than Es so I have more of a reason to hate him now >:( I'm not fluent in Japanese but I gave my best shot at translating this promotion video because I couldn't find if someone else has already translated this. It was my first time seriously attempting to translate a full dialogue from Milgram like this, so honestly... Expect errors (reference to my username and alliteration not intended but hey, it works).
I love Japanese ads. This has to be the best ad I've subjected myself to since the milk ad or the one with Hayami Saori breaking down over udon. Please don't send me to the psych ward.
