His hand enclosed around hers at once as she approached, the other holding steady on the crutch keeping him upright. Ever since their takeover of Nassau, Silver had been pulled in every which way IMAGINABLE, at one moment stood in the Governor’s Mansion, organising crews, and the next, stood on the beach, preparing for any potential retaliation from the fort, now entrenched with Eleanor Guthrie and some of Rogers’ men. To even steal this quiet moment together was apparently a luxury to be treasured above everything else, but Silver knew that it wouldn’t be long before he was called away again.
The barest hint of a smile pulled at his lip as he lowered his tone, grateful that Elizabeth was still safe and accounted for if nothing else. Amidst all the chaos, he couldn’t deny that there was nothing he currently wanted more than a few moments of PEACE, to secure their victory in the town and work to stabilise order and commerce, and begin setting into motion the new structure required to operate Nassau as a colony free of the Crown. But every time one fire was put out, five more were simultaneously started. Flint had said that it would pass, but hours of violence and brutality were continuing to tick by.
‟ The situation will calm. It has to calm out there. And when it does I can more easily delegate responsibility. ”
❛ are you completely certain of that? ❜ suspicion fell like a haze over her dark eyes as she glanced at him. it sounded like the sort of reassurance that flint would offer, and she had to wonder if he was merely parroting it. whether it was for her benefit or his own, she couldn’t say. but it left something to be desired, certainly. not even his hand around hers could offer her much reassurance in that moment. they had secured themselves a victory, but it was a small one. there was still a great deal of hard work ahead for them, and elizabeth still wasn’t entirely sure how they planned to achieve it.
❛ the men have gone completely mad in the streets. i have half a mind to wonder if they’re doing more harm than good. ❜ they deserved their celebrations, of course, but there were some taking their actions to the extreme, causing larger messes that flint, silver, and the rest of them would inevitably have to clean up if they ever hoped to rebuild nassau to its former glory.
a quiet sigh left her as she lifted his hand, lips brushing across his knuckles gingerly. ❛ does flint even have a plan for all of this? or has he placed that responsibility upon your shoulders as well? ❜
