Avengers: Age of Ultron Competition

The next chapter in the extensive Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally upon us, with this week’s release of Avengers: Age Of Ultron (you can read our review here). The cool guys over at Marvel and Disney gave us a set of hampers to give away to some lucky fans and our good friends at Critters and Comics decided they also wanted to get in on the giveaway action and they’re sponsoring a Marvel’s Avengers inspired hamper from their online store.

Avengers: Age of Ultron Review

When Tony Stark jump starts a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as they battle to save the planet from destruction at the hands of the villainous Ultron.

In 2008, Iron Man started us off on a journey that since been named the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU, for short. Little did we know that this movie would be the start of an epic 11 year cinematic journey.  I can still remember my mind being blown at the post-credits scene where S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury visits Tony Stark and he tells him that Iron Man is not the only superhero in the world. It’s a cinematic universe that’s since been expanded into the world of television and with up to 22 movies. This week sees the release of the latest offering from Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, and the highly anticipated sequel to the 2012 blockbuster Marvel’s The Avengers. Yes folks, Avengers: Age of Ultron is finally upon us!

Tony Stark realizes that even The Avengers won’t be able to hold off, and protect the Earth, against a major alien invasion so he secretly starts working on a peacekeeping program which mainly consists of artificial intelligence. Somehow things go extremely wrong and his dormant system gives birth to the biggest enemy The Avengers as seen so far – Ultron. He’s dangerous because he’s partly made up of what is essentially Tony Stark and this is what makes Ultron turn against The Avengers and humans in general. He sees them as the biggest threat to peace on earth and he embarks on a mission to rid the Earth of this threat. Things start going wrong for our heroes very early on and this just might be the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back. Will our heroes be able to overcome their internal struggles and issues to deal with Ultron and the danger he poses to them and humans in general?  This is the underlying question throughout the movie, and we see them struggle with this as the story takes them all over the world.

Much has been said and written about the new characters that were added to the MCU as we know it. The Maximoff twins, Wanda and Pietro (Elizabeth Olsen & Aaron Taylor-Johnson), makes their debut in Age of Ultron and at first, we find them on the wrong side of the law. Pietro, also known as Quicksilver, possess’ the power of incredible speed while his sister Wanda, or Scarlet Witch, has the power of mental manipulation and telekinesis. We’ve seen Quicksilver on the silver screen before, but I quite prefer this version of the character. He’s fiercely protective of his sister and together they make for quite the team, posing a considerable threat to The Avengers. Rounding out the bevy of new characters is The Vision, played by Paul Bettany (long time voice actor for JARVIS, Stark’s computer based right-hand guy). I’m not going to say much about The Vision, as his appearance is one of the things that most comic book fans are looking forward to seeing. His powers are truly spectacular and I can’t wait to see him in the follow-up movies, we need to see how the writers expand his character. As mentioned before, the super villain in this story is an AI named Ultron. His power expands to an area where not even The Avengers can touch him and James Spader truly brings Ultron to life in a spectacular way. He’s got a way to use his voice so that the metal robot becomes almost human, yet still terrifying to behold.

There are small tweaks to our heroes’ suits and weapons. Hulk got brand new pants, which he wears underneath his clothes, as to prevent him from ending up naked after he transforms back to Bruce Banner. It’s made of a high-tech micro-fiber fabric, which stretches with him. Hawkeye got some cool new arrow points and his quiver has also been redesigned. It’s faster loading and automated, and it can hold up to 9 arrows at a time. Black Widow also gets a weapon upgrade and even Cap gets to join in the upgrade fun. Look out for new features added to his shield.

But no South African Avengers: Age of Ultron review can be complete without mentioning our very own supporting actor in the movie – Johannesburg! Jozi rocked its turn in the movie, and it is awesome! We all know that highly anticipated showdown between the Hulkbuster and The Hulk goes down in the Johannesburg city center, and it was just amazing to see the South African extras and our very own Police Service on the big screen. Look out for an amazing shot of the Jo’burg city skyline. We even get a mention in the credits under the heading SOUTH AFRICAN UNIT. It made me so proud to see all those Saffer names being listed and acknowledged. This was one of the many highlights for me during this movie, for sure!

I have no doubt in my mind that this movie is going to be bigger and better than the first Avengers outing. It’s got everything we loved about the first movie – cool characters, awesome action scenes and humor, but done on a bigger scale. This time we know these characters and we’ve seen them struggling with what happened in New York, and I really liked that the writers built on those issues. We see how it’s changed The Avengers and how they see the world, and we also get a glimpse of how the world sees them; maybe even sowing the seeds for Captain America: Civil War. This is most definitely a movie you need to see on the big screen, in fact, the bigger the better. It’s a perfect outing for the family as there is no graphic violence or sexual scenes in the movie. The only question that remains is how many times will you go back to see it again on the big screen?

Six designers first in Africa to pay tribute to iconic Avengers characters

Johannesburg, South Africa, 21 March 2014; The Walt Disney Company Africa is proud to announce that, in collaboration with SA Fashion Week, it is paying tribute to the super hero team up of a lifetime – Marvel’s Avengers. Tonight, 21 March 2015, at the ’15 Spring/Summer Collection Showcase, six designers revealed their ready-to-wear lines, entirely inspired by the iconic characters featured in the upcoming 24 April cinematic release of Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.

After a month-long search in December 2014, six designers from across the continent were chosen to showcase their lines at SA Fashion Week. They are South African designers Siyabonga Ntini (Ralfe), Roman Handt (Roman Handt) and Luiz Delaja (M4S) as well as Zimbabwean designer Rumbidzai Muzofa (Rumbie by Rumbie), Zambian designers Christina Kabamba and Donna M’shanga (Kamanga) and South African-based (Spanish-born) designer Amos Tranque (Amos Tranque). Drawing inspiration from Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow and The Incredible Hulk, the designers were given free rein to bring each character’s iconic imagery and style to their chosen men’s and women’s lines.

Each designer’s unique take on the Marvel brand and their incorporation of the Avengers characters showcased remarkable use of fabrics and materials, whilst playing with silhouettes, shapes and colours in both men’s and women’s fashion. An exciting fusion of designs from across the continent provided eye-catching and celebratory pieces that included futuristic, traditional and contemporary elements mixed with a distinct blend of African themes and, of course, some daring twists.

“As fans the world over anticipate the release of the next chapter in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, we are thrilled not only to be celebrating the Avengers but also the immense talent that the designers have brought to the SA Fashion Week runway,” says Deirdre King, Head of Marketing for The Walt Disney Company Africa. ‘The Inspired by Marvel campaign truly showcase the timeless and universal appeal that these characters have,  whilst remaining relevant in since they first appeared in comic books almost 5 decades ago.”

This is not Disney’s first foray into high fashion – even as far back as 1937, the company collaborated with Cartier for a piece inspired by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Recent collaborations globally include the likes of Tommy Hilfiger, D&G, Castelbajac, Philipp Plein, Chopard, adidas, Havaianas and Desigual to name a few. Earlier this year, world-renown shoe designers such as Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin, revealed their own Inspired by Cinderella Shoe designs at the European Premiere of the film. On the local front, 2013 saw Suzaan Heyns becoming the first designer on the continent to participate in the Inspired by Minnie campaign that debuted at SA Fashion Week in October.

The Inspired by Marvel Collections mark the upcoming 24 April cinematic release of Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. South African fans have an extra reason to celebrate as the hotly anticipated film features key action sequences shot entirely in Johannesburg. Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as The Incredible Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.
