The moment Jeremy felt like spiraling was when his parents died and he secretly started getting high and having sex with Victoria Donovan. He needed an outlet for his grief and chose to escape it rather than dealing with it. He got a Gilbert ring from his father and after Alaric Saltzman died because his ring made him crazy, Jeremy gave it to Matthew Donovan.
Jeremy became a hunter because of Cassius Lawson sacrificing his cousin Elena Gilbert, prompting him to go out there and kill the bad supernaturals. However, when they got word of a cure in Nova Scotia, Jeremy died at the hands of Katherine Pierce and he wasn't wearing his Gilbert ring, so he wouldn't come back to life this time.
When the veil dropped, he crossed back over with Alaric, but he couldn't have Bonnie Bennett with him since she'd died when doing a spell to bring him back. Jeremy failed to escape Mystic Falls before the Nemeton detonated, taken over by his own Gilbert ring and his loved ones are trying to find a way to save him before it’s too late.
