P2, P3, P4, P5, P7 Experimentation
Today I tried automatism. Automatism is the idea of creating a piece of art without the rational mind, without the conscious mind getting involved. This was a popular method used in Surrealism as artist’s wanted to turn away from the rational and conscious mind. To do this, I primed a piece of newspaper and a piece of cardboard with white acrylic paint and then just a piece of A3 paper. I then used a black/ grey marker pen, closed my eyes and let the pen guide me. I had created what looked like just a giant scribble. However, when I looked at the drawing properly, I noticed that there were shapes and forms within the scribble. I used different coloured markers to highlight these areas. I then got another piece of primed cardboard and drew these shapes and forms onto them using the same colours. I had found shapes that resembled jellyfish, a skull, figures and more. This was a fun experiment to do.
