So I'm ace (and maybe aro, but maybe not, idk) and I often get confused about whether I'm attracted to someone romantically, physically, all of it. I don't know how to talk to someone I'm interested in, how do I show that I'm into them without making it weird. Where do I look, what do I say, when and how do I touch them. How do I respond to what they say or do. And for a long long time I thought that this was an ace/aro thing and because I don't have any experience dating, but it's occurred to me today that this could also be an autistic thing??? I already know I'm autistic (self-diagnosed), though that's still kind of new. Whereas I've known I'm ace for like 10 years at least. Knowing that I can also view this in an autistic light makes it make so much more sense!!!
my least favorite part of having autism is how much more effort i have to put into my relationships than the other person
like in a perfect world i would find a friend group who are all completely normal about my autism and treat me like every other member of the group but in reality ive never had a friend that i didnt have to put 10 times the emotional energy into the friendship to “earn” their friendship
i’m always the person who has to make the plans, i’m always the person who has to cover things for other people, i always have to be nicer to the other person than they are to me, i always have to make accommodations for the other person that they would never make for me and from tested experience if i stop doing these things the person stops being friends with me
I'm autistic. I don't like change. Why do I have to have a gender that changes?! And why does it have to be called 'manfluid'? I mean, come on.
I feel like my interests are childish -> I don’t tell anyone about them -> I fell like nobody in my life knows anything about me or the things I enjoy -> I get into something new to cope and let the other part of me quietly die and tell myself it’ll be different this time

but let’s not continue the trend of allistic and neurotypical people co-opting terms from the autistic* community. this is the same way people have started saying “overstimulated” with they mean slightly annoyed or overwhelmed or that they went “non verbal” when they decided to stop talking
to you the neurotypical you’re using these words like slang but to us autistic people you are watering down the terms we use to describe our specific experiences and in turn people take these things less seriously, maybe look to why you are insisting on using special interest instead of saying you have a strong interest or any other adjective that would describe what you are saying
*im saying autistic here because im talking about these terms in relation to the autistic community but ofc these terms apply to other disorders. i am not aware of what op may or may not be diagnosed with and i dont mean this as an attack on them just add perspective on why posts like these are unhelpful and can even be harmful to different neurodivergent communities. when you insist on being able to use a term majorly used specifically and intentionally by a community you are disregarding that community
